MARTIN WITHERS FROM CINNAMON BROW STRIPPED OF NURSING LICENSE AFTER CHILD PORN SCANDAL IN CHESTER
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Cinnamon Brow, Martin Withers, a 29-year-old nurse, has been found guilty of possessing a significant collection of child pornography on his personal computer. The revelations emerged during a court hearing held at Chester Crown Court in January 2007, where Withers faced serious charges related to the possession and creation of indecent images of children as young as infants.According to court records, Withers was arrested after a friend of his discovered a folder labeled ‘kiddies’ on his computer. This folder contained a horrifying array of material, including three video clips depicting young boys engaged in sexual acts. Further investigation revealed that the hard drive contained a total of 193 photographs and eight videos of an explicit nature, some classified at the highest level of depravity, known as ‘level five’.
Following his arrest, Withers admitted to 11 counts of making or possessing indecent images of children. His actions led to a nine-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years, reflecting the severity of his offenses. The case drew widespread attention, prompting the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to take disciplinary action against him. In November 2007, the NMC suspended Withers from practicing as a nurse for 18 months while an inquiry was conducted into his conduct.
Withers attempted to challenge the disciplinary proceedings, requesting that the hearing in London be held in private, citing concerns over the distress his family might suffer. However, the NMC dismissed this appeal, emphasizing that any distress was his own responsibility. Ultimately, on December 16, 2008, the council imposed a lifelong ban on Withers from practicing nursing, citing the gravity of his misconduct.
During the proceedings, Adrianna McDonnell, representing the NMC, revealed that police investigations uncovered a paedophile ring connected to Withers. Evidence indicated that he was not only a recipient of illicit images but also involved in facilitating their distribution. McDonnell explained that although Withers denied directly downloading the images and videos, he was more forthcoming about receiving them. He admitted to having formed close relationships with individuals from Manchester, who visited his residence multiple times and used his computer to download the material. Withers claimed he disliked participating in this activity but did not stop his acquaintances from doing so, nor did he report it to authorities.
Gill Barker, chair of the disciplinary panel, expressed her firm stance on the case, stating that the panel had carefully considered all aspects before reaching its decision. She criticized Withers for failing to acknowledge the harm inflicted on the children depicted in the images and for showing no remorse. Barker highlighted the disturbing nature of the material, noting that the viewing of such images fuels a market for child exploitation. She emphasized that allowing Withers to continue practicing as a nurse would pose a significant risk to public safety and the integrity of the profession, leading to the decision to remove him from the nursing register permanently.
