June 2020 Paedophile abused four-year-old and said her parents would go to prison if she told anyone A paedophile sexually abused a four-year-old then threatened her into silence by warning that her parents would go to prison if she said anything, a court has heard. Martin Royston Williams – who now goes by the name Derek Harris – stripped off and rubbed himself on the girl, touched her naked body, and kissed her. Swansea Crown Court heard the assault happened more than three decades ago – but the victim still lives with the abuse to this day. Sending him to prison, a judge told Williams the case was a reminder of the long-lasting harm of sexual abuse. Tom Scapens, prosecuting, said the offending took place in Swansea in the 1980s, when Williams was in early 20s and his victim was aged four. He said the defendant showed the youngster pornographic magazines before removing his trousers and underpants and rubbing himself against her. Williams also touched the girl’s genitals and breasts, and kissed her – including the use of the tongue. The court heard he told his victim that if she reported the matter to her parents they would end up going to prison. Mr Scapens said the victim later recalled how she “cried herself to sleep” the night after the assault. The prosecutor said in fact the girl’s parents did find out about what had happened but the father took no action – and as he was “in charge of the household” the mother had felt unable to do anything other than go along with it. In a brief statement from the victim which was read to the court she said the emotional and psychological impact of what happened remained with her after more than 30 years, but that she was trying to move on with her life. Williams, aged 56, of Wyndham Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault when he appeared in the dock via videolink for sentencing. The court heard he has 15 previous convictions for 48 offences including matters of violence and dishonesty, as well as a number of sexual offences. In 1979 he was convicted at Gowerton Juvenile Court of two counts of indecent assault on a boy under 14, while in 2008 he was sentenced to seven years at Dorchester Crown Court after being convicted of raping and repeatedly indecently assaulting an 11-year-old girl. Though know as Williams when living in Swansea, the court heard he has since legally changed his name to Derek Harris. Giving the defendant credit for his guilty pleas she sentenced him to five years in prison. Williams will serve half that time in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. The defendant was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order for an indefinite period, and will remain a registered sex offender.
