MARTIN WILLIAMS FROM SWINDON SENTENCED FOR DISTURBING SEXUAL COMMENTS TO TEENAGE GIRL NEAR SOUTH CERNEY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Martin Williams, a resident of Swindon, was sentenced to prison after engaging in highly inappropriate and predatory behavior towards a 13-year-old girl. The incident took place in March 2019, when Williams was driving the young girl through the area near South Cerney, a location known for its tranquil countryside and popular tourist spots.
According to court proceedings, Williams, aged 48 at the time, began making lewd comments about the girl’s appearance during the car journey.
He complimented her by saying she was “really fit and pretty” and made inappropriate remarks about her physical features, specifically mentioning her “big boobs.” The girl, who was understandably uncomfortable, attempted to steer the conversation away from these uncomfortable topics and change the subject.
However, Williams persisted with his lecherous commentary, showing a disturbing lack of regard for her feelings or boundaries.
The situation escalated when Williams parked the vehicle near South Cerney to relieve himself.
Despite this pause, he continued his inappropriate behavior.
Prosecutor James Tucker told Swindon Crown Court that Williams explicitly expressed his desire to have sex with the girl, stating, “If I was younger I would s*** you.
I’m deadly serious.” These comments revealed a clear predatory intent and a gross violation of the girl’s innocence and safety.
Furthermore, Williams urged the girl not to report their conversation, allegedly warning her, “You can’t tell anyone,” and adding, “You can’t even tell your mum or dad else my daughter would be taken off me.” These coercive remarks aimed to silence the victim and prevent her from seeking help or justice.
The girl’s mother later discovered the conversation, which prompted her to report the incident to the police, leading to Williams’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.
During the hearing, Judge Jason Taylor QC described Williams’s actions as “grooming conversation,” emphasizing that his intent was to lay the groundwork for future sexual activity rather than a one-time incident.
The judge acknowledged the profound impact such predatory behavior can have on a young victim, stating, “What happened in this case is best described as grooming conversation where you were laying the groundwork for future penetrative sex as opposed to that day.
That, of course, doesn’t minimise the fear that your victim experienced.” He further remarked that although the incident may have been relatively short-lived, the emotional scars could last a lifetime, asserting, “This incident may have been relatively, and I emphasise the word relatively, short lived but it will remain with her for far longer – possibly her life – and this court must reflect that.” Williams, who resides on Leighton Avenue in Park South, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and engaging in sexual communication with a minor.
The court took into account his mental health disorder when determining the sentence.
Despite the possibility of a suspended sentence, Judge Taylor emphasized that immediate custody was necessary, reflecting the severity of the offense.
As part of his punishment, Williams was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
Additionally, he is required to comply with a sexual harm prevention order and will be registered as a sex offender for life.
A three-year restraining order has also been issued, prohibiting him from making any contact with the victim, ensuring her safety and peace of mind moving forward.
