MAN JAILED FOR GROOMING AND ABUSING GIRL IN GWENT
A man who subjected a young girl to grooming and sexual abuse over two decades ago has been sentenced to six years and six months in prison.Martin Pugh, aged 58, was handed his sentence at Newport Crown Court on May 22 after being convicted of gross indecency with a girl under 14.
The offenses occurred between 1998 and 1999, during which he preyed upon an 11-year-old girl.
PC Nathan Attwell, involved in the case, stated: "Pugh intentionally groomed and exploited a young girl who trusted and looked up to him, believing he would protect her.
Instead, he betrayed that trust in the most severe way, sexually abusing her for his own pleasure.
No young person should have to endure such harm.
These crimes have left a deep and lasting impact, not only on the victim but also on both families, causing considerable distress.
I want to praise the victim for her bravery in coming forward, especially after carrying this burden for so long.
Her courage was key to bringing justice.
I hope this sentence sends a strong message to other victims of sexual abuse that we take all reports, whether recent or historic, very seriously.
We are dedicated to thoroughly investigating every allegation and supporting victims throughout the process.
We want victims to feel confident that if they speak out, they will be listened to and treated with dignity." Gwent Police urged anyone who has suffered sexual abuse to come forward, with support available through police and partner agencies.
