SWINDON CHILD RAPIST MARTIN CONNOLLY SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS FOR DECADES OF ABUSE
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Swindon, 77-year-old Martin Connolly, also known as Mark, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 19 years for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over several decades. The court heard that Connolly showed no remorse for his actions, which involved the systematic abuse of five vulnerable children from the 1960s through to the early 2000s, leaving a lasting impact on his victims.
During the proceedings at Swindon Crown Court, it was revealed that all of the offenses predated the 2003 legal reforms, meaning Connolly will be required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before he can even consider applying for parole.
Given his age, it is highly unlikely he will be released before the end of his life, effectively ensuring he remains behind bars until his death.
The trial took an unusual turn when Connolly, who was initially defending himself against charges related to four victims, began to make admissions in the witness box.
After completing his testimony, he requested that the charges be read back to him, and he subsequently admitted to all but one count of the allegations.
Judge Tim Mousley QC described the case as involving "sustained, systematic, gross abuse of vulnerable young children," including acts of rape, grooming, and attempts to introduce some victims to pornography.
Judge Mousley emphasized the severity of Connolly’s actions, stating, "There was grooming and that included attempts by you to get, some of them at least, to watch pornography.
I detect no remorse in you whatsoever." He further explained that Connolly’s abuse was more than opportunistic; it was deliberate and calculated, with profound and lasting effects on each victim.
The judge highlighted that the children, all innocent and vulnerable, suffered trauma that would likely affect them for the rest of their lives.
Details of the abuse revealed that Connolly repeatedly raped a girl aged between seven and twelve, molested a boy aged six or seven, attempted to rape a girl aged 13 or 14, groped another child between the ages of four and twelve, and assaulted a final victim also aged 13 or 14.
The court heard emotional victim impact statements, including one from a girl who described how the abuse had affected her entire life.
Prosecutor Simon Jones read these statements, emphasizing the deep and enduring scars left by Connolly’s actions.
Connolly, residing at Windmill Court, Uxbridge Road, Freshbrook, admitted to three counts of rape, one attempted rape, eleven counts of indecent assault, and gross indecency.
One additional charge of rape was left on file.
The abuse took place while he was living on Ramsbury Avenue and Penhill Drive, locations in Swindon where the crimes occurred.
In a separate but related case from January 2017, Connolly was described as a sex offender who preyed on children for nearly 40 years.
The jury was told that he had targeted children aged from four to fourteen, with his crimes spanning from the late 1960s to the early 2000s.
This included a disturbing incident where he attempted to rape a girl aged 13 or 14, and he admitted to indecently assaulting her between 1978 and 1980 after being caught on tape discussing the abuse.
Connolly later explained to police that he had tried to rape her multiple times due to being 'sexually frustrated' at the time.
Despite these admissions, Connolly denies several other allegations involving one boy and three girls.
Prosecutor Steven Jones outlined that Connolly’s initial targeting of a young boy in the late 1960s involved coercing him into touching him in exchange for money, with the boy being only six or seven years old at the time.
The court also heard testimony from the boy’s older brother, who recounted overhearing Connolly instructing his younger sibling to touch him and promising a shilling in return.
Further allegations involved a girl who claimed Connolly, known to her as Mark, began abusing her in 1989 when she was just seven years old.
She described ongoing abuse at his home on Penhill Drive, which continued until she was 12 in 1995.
She recounted that Connolly would give her sweets and cigarettes as bribes, and that he raped and sexually assaulted her in various parts of his house, including the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, often while his partner was absent.
She also reported being shown pornography by Connolly.
Another girl, who was also under his care, described how Connolly had shown her pornography as well.
The prosecution highlighted the similarities in these behaviors as significant evidence of a pattern of predatory conduct.
The second girl told police that she was abused after learning of the first girl’s allegations in late 2014, and she recounted instances of Connolly touching her breasts and, on one occasion in the early 2000s, putting his hand up her skirt.
When questioned by police, Connolly denied the allegations, claiming that the girls and the boy were lying.
He admitted to kissing the girl who accused him of rape but insisted that she had come onto him, denying any further misconduct.
Connolly faces multiple charges, including four counts of rape, seven counts of indecent assault, one count of indecency with a child, and one of indecent assault of a male child.
He has also admitted to attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault on the same victim.
The case remains ongoing as the court continues to hear evidence and arguments.
