MARTIN GRIERSON'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN HULL: 15-YEAR SENTENCE FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST VICTIM WHO LIED IN COURT
In a case that has shocked the community of Hull, Martin Grierson, aged 61, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 15 years after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences. The conviction followed a detailed five-day trial at Hull Crown Court, where the court heard harrowing details of his abuse and manipulation of a woman he had groomed since she was a child nearly three decades ago.
Grierson, who is currently reported to be in poor health, showed no visible emotion as the jury returned guilty verdicts on all nine charges he faced.
These included seven offences committed against the woman who testified against him, as well as two attempted rapes involving another woman, which occurred after she had undergone significant surgery.
Throughout the proceedings, Grierson remained seated in the dock, leaning on his left hand, as the foreman of the jury announced the verdicts.
The court was told that the woman, who had been manipulated and groomed by Grierson from a young age, felt compelled to lie in court during earlier proceedings in the 1990s.
During those trials, Grierson was accused of offences against another individual, and the woman, under pressure and emotional distress, perjured herself to protect him.
Her decision to lie was driven by her feelings for Grierson, with whom she had a sexual relationship at the time.
However, as years passed, she began to realize the extent of the abuse and the abnormality of their relationship.
Her life was profoundly affected; she started abusing drugs and drinking heavily, which further complicated her ability to lead a normal life.
The judge, Mark Bury, acknowledged the profound impact Grierson’s actions had on her, describing her life as being 'blighted' by his misconduct.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Bury emphasized the overwhelming evidence against Grierson, noting that the victim had to live with the guilt and shame of her past actions.
He explained that her feelings for Grierson had initially led her to lie in court, but she eventually recognized the severity of his grooming and manipulation.
The judge expressed hope that the victim would find some closure once she learns of her perpetrator’s sentence.
The charges Grierson faced included four counts of indecency with a child, one count of having sex with a girl under 13, and two additional serious sexual offences.
The court highlighted that Grierson had manipulated and groomed his victim over many years, causing lasting damage to her life and well-being.
Despite some admissions made by Grierson to others, he failed to formally confess these crimes in court, which could have potentially reduced his sentence and alleviated some of the pain experienced by the witnesses.
Furthermore, the court noted that some of Grierson’s offences are classified as 'offences of particular concern,' meaning he will not be eligible for automatic release halfway through his sentence.
Instead, his release will be subject to the decision of the Parole Board, which will assess whether it is safe to do so.
Grierson will also be registered as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
This case underscores the devastating effects of grooming and sexual abuse, and the justice served in Hull aims to send a clear message that such conduct will not be tolerated.
The community is left to reflect on the profound harm inflicted by Grierson, and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior.
