MARTIN BARKER FROM PRESTON SENTENCED FOR GROOMING OFFENSES INVOLVING CHILDREN
In October 2018, a disturbing case involving a man from Preston who believed he was engaging in online grooming activities was brought to a close with a court sentencing.Martin John Barker, aged 51, was brought before Preston Crown Court after being held on remand for a period of seven weeks.
During this time, Barker faced serious allegations related to his online conduct, which ultimately led to his guilty plea on multiple charges.
Specifically, Barker admitted to enticing a child under the age of 16 into sexual activity and also attempting to persuade the same or another child to witness sexual acts.
These actions were part of a disturbing pattern of behavior that raised significant concern among law enforcement and the community alike.
The case was further complicated by the fact that Barker was caught by dedicated paedophile hunting teams, known as 'Catching Online Predators' and 'Fleetwood Enforcers.' The decoy used in this operation was identified as China Dekoi, who successfully lured Barker into the trap.
Following his guilty plea, Barker was sentenced to eight months in prison for each of the charges, with the sentences to run concurrently.
However, the court suspended the prison term for two years, meaning Barker would not serve time unless he committed another offense within that period.
Additionally, Barker was subjected to a six-month electronic tagging curfew, requiring him to remain at home from 7 pm to 7 am.
As part of his ongoing restrictions, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) also lasting ten years.
Furthermore, Barker was mandated to participate in the Horizon Project, a rehabilitation program aimed at addressing the underlying issues related to his offending behavior.
The court also imposed strict conditions preventing him from having any unsupervised contact with females under 18 years of age for the duration of his registration as a sex offender.
These measures are designed to protect potential victims and prevent any future offending.
In a related matter, police investigations revealed that Barker possessed child sexual abuse images on his electronic devices.
However, after a thorough examination and download of his devices, no further action was taken regarding these images, as Barker admitted possession but did not face additional charges related to this material.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and community groups to combat online grooming and protect vulnerable children from exploitation.
