Mark Thompson sentenced after assaulting his ex in the early hours of the morning at her home

MARK THOMPSON SENTENCED AFTER ASSAULTING HIS EX IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING AT HER HOME

A Skelmanthorpe man has appeared in court following an early hours attack on his ex in her home.

Mark Thompson, of Matherville, had pleaded guilty to assaulting Susan Burland at an earlier hearing.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, told Kirklees magistrates that the attack happened on March 23.

Thompson had arranged to visit Ms Burland at her Golcar home.

The 37-year-old arrived at 1am but left after she told him that she didn’t want him to stay.

He left and Ms Burland went back to bed.

Mr Bozman said: “She was awoken at 5.30am and opened the door to him.

“There was an argument and he accepts he punched her in the face and grabbed her by the throat.” Ms Burland went back inside, shut the door and called police.

She suffered a cut lip, reddening to her cheek and a grazed leg as a result of the assault.

Magistrates heard that Thompson had been out drinking with friends before visiting his former partner.

Thompson had 59 offences on his record, the last of which he was jailed for in September 2012.

Paul Blanchard, mitigating, said that one of his convictions related to violence.

He said: “This is an isolated incident.

“He said I don’t want to put her through a trial, I have to accept my behaviour is wholly unacceptable.” “The parties wish to reconcile and put the matter behind them.” Mr Blanchard added that Thompson understood that he was likely to go to custody should he commit another offence.

Magistrates sentenced Thompson to a 12-month community order with 220 hours of unpaid work.

He must also pay £85 costs and £60 victim surcharge.
