MARK SWEENEY, EX-LIVERPOOL POLICE OFFICER FROM OLD SWAN, JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

In December 2012, a disturbing case involving a former police officer from Merseyside unfolded, highlighting the grave consequences of child exploitation and misconduct. Mark Sweeney, aged 39, who previously served as a constable with Merseyside Police and was based in St Helens, was ultimately convicted and sentenced for possessing and downloading a significant number of child abuse images. His actions not only led to his dismissal from the police force but also resulted in a jail term that underscores the severity of his offenses.

Investigations revealed that Sweeney had accessed more than 380 indecent images of children across three different computers. These images depicted young girls aged between 11 and 12, with the content spanning a range of seriousness, from less severe to highly disturbing. Prosecutors classified the majority of these images as Category One, indicating the least serious level of child exploitation material. However, the court was also shown evidence of three images falling into the fifth and most severe category, which included sadistic depictions of children suffering sexual abuse inflicted by adults. Such images, the court was told, could cause lifelong psychological trauma to the victims.

Judge Michael Henshall condemned Sweeney’s actions, emphasizing the tragic irony of his former role as a police officer entrusted with upholding the law. The judge pointed out that Sweeney, who had a background in the army before joining the police, was well aware of the harm inflicted upon children, yet he continued to indulge in these illicit activities. The court was informed that Sweeney was even found to have indecent images stored on his mobile phone while he was on bail, awaiting trial for the child pornography offenses.

During the sentencing, Judge Henshall remarked, “The fact you are a police officer is one of the tragedies of this case. You knew more than the average man who comes before these courts that each child was a victim that had been degraded and abused.” The judge further stated that Sweeney’s actions demonstrated a strong sexual attraction to girls aged between 11 and 12, which was a central concern in the case.

Following his conviction, Sweeney was dismissed from Merseyside Police at a misconduct hearing held in November. His criminal record includes 11 counts of making indecent images of children and six counts of possession. Although he had no prior convictions, he had previously received a written warning from a police superintendent after being found making calls to chat lines from Moss Bank police station in 2006.

Prosecutor Sarah Johnston explained that the investigation into Sweeney’s activities began when officers seized a laptop belonging to his ex-partner at a residence situated between Crawford and Rainford, where the couple had lived. Further evidence was uncovered after analyzing two computers taken from Sweeney’s home address in Old Swan, Liverpool. Additional indecent images were discovered on his Nokia mobile phone while he was on bail for the initial charges.

Sweeney, who resided on Gidlow Road South in Liverpool, maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. He denied the charges at trial, claiming that he had only searched for adult pornography online and that other individuals had access to his ex-partner’s computer. Despite his denials, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him.

In sentencing, Sweeney received a prison term of ten months, with the court ruling that he would serve half of that sentence. Additionally, he was subjected to a ten-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which restricts his access to children and mandates that any digital devices he owns be available for police inspection. The judge’s decision reflects the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing risk posed by individuals involved in such activities.
