MARK BOCKER FROM FORMBY AND GLASGOW CONVICTED OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

In a shocking turn of events, Mark Smith, also known as Mark Bocker, a former educator with deep roots in Formby and Glasgow, has been convicted of possessing and viewing child abuse images. Smith, who once held prominent positions in schools across Merseyside and the North West, now faces the harsh reality of a criminal conviction after a lengthy career that spanned nearly four decades.

Smith’s professional journey included roles such as headteacher at Oswaldtwistle School in Lancashire, an alternative provision school designed for students who have been excluded from mainstream education or require specialized support. Prior to this, he served as the head of a pupil referral unit (PRU) in Knowsley, institutions that cater to pupils with behavioral challenges or those who have been expelled from traditional schools. His expertise in managing difficult student behavior earned him recognition within the education sector, and he was frequently featured on educational podcasts dedicated to safeguarding and improving pupil conduct.

In one now-removed episode of the podcast, Smith, who had previously taught physical education, discussed his career trajectory. He explained that after relocating from Glasgow to England, he continued working in various educational roles before focusing on schools serving students with complex behavioral needs. The podcast’s description highlighted his belief that schools should offer life-affirming experiences and that educators and caregivers must work together to empower children to achieve their aspirations. It also noted his involvement in governance, including serving as chair of governors for a trust operating a school in his hometown of Formby, and his participation in multiple education councils.

Despite his professional reputation, Smith’s personal life took a dark turn when police received a tip-off regarding indecent images stored on a device later traced back to him. The investigation led to his arrest last year, during which authorities discovered a significant collection of child abuse images on a Samsung phone. Prosecutor Peter Hussey revealed that on just one device, authorities identified approximately 82 indecent images of children, categorized into the most serious Category A, along with Category B and C images. The images depicted young girls being subjected to abuse, torture, and rape, causing widespread outrage.

Following his arrest, Smith was brought before Liverpool Crown Court. In a court hearing, he was handed a six-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, after being found guilty of possessing and viewing child abuse images. During the proceedings, Smith attempted to obscure his identity by changing his name shortly before the trial, but the judge, Mr. Justice Swinnerton, confirmed his birth surname and acknowledged his extensive experience in education. The judge expressed profound disappointment, stating, “It is a great pity that a man who has done a great deal for children in difficult circumstances finds himself before the court after looking at pictures of children being abused.”

Smith’s case has sent shockwaves through the communities of Formby and Glasgow, where he was once regarded as a dedicated professional committed to safeguarding and supporting vulnerable children. His fall from grace underscores the importance of vigilance and the ongoing need to protect children from exploitation, even from those entrusted with their care.
