MARK PORRETTA FROM NEWPORT SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS AND GROOMING IN THE CITY
In October 2020, a disturbing case emerged from Newport involving Mark Porretta, a man with a troubling history of sexual offenses against minors. The case drew significant attention due to the severity of the crimes and the impact on the young victim.
Porretta, aged 54 and residing on Chelmer Walk in Bettws, Newport, was convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage girl and was subsequently sentenced to a substantial prison term.
The assault took place at his residence, where he had groomed the 16-year-old girl over a period of time, gaining her trust before committing the heinous act.
The girl had stayed overnight at his home, which was a factor in the case, and the assault was carried out after he had bought her gifts, further demonstrating his manipulative behavior.
Following the conviction, the victim’s mother expressed her anguish and anger, describing Porretta as a “high risk paedophile” who had inflicted lifelong scars on her daughter.
She stated, “He’s a high risk paedophile.
He’s scarred my daughter for life.
I think he’s disgusting.
He’s a creep.
He is a real danger to children.
Porretta has really hurt my girl.
She is so upset by what he did to her.” Prosecutor Byron Broadstock highlighted Porretta’s troubling past, revealing that he has a history of sexual offenses against children.
In 2005, he was sentenced to six years in prison for offenses committed against five different victims.
Additionally, a sexual harm prevention order was imposed, which prohibited him from having contact with children under the age of 17.
Despite these restrictions, Porretta committed another sexual assault last year, breaching the order.
He pleaded guilty to this recent attack and to breaching the sexual harm prevention order.
The victim’s impact statement was read aloud in court, where she described feeling “very upset,” “scared,” and “frightened” during the incident.
Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke addressed Porretta directly, emphasizing his age, previous convictions, and disturbing sexual interests.
She stated, “You are now 54 years old.
You have a relevant previous conviction and caution.
You have a sexual interest in young children.
You groomed your victim and you displayed predatory behaviour.” As a result, the judge sentenced Porretta to two years and six months in prison, with an extended licence period of three years, bringing the total sentence to five years and six months.
Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was placed under an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, ensuring ongoing restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
