MARK NEWBOLD SENT BACK TO PRISON IN DERBY FOR SEX OFFENDER REGISTER BREACHES
Mark Newbold, a convicted sex offender from Derby, has been returned to prison after deliberately breaching the terms of his sex offender registration requirements. The 54-year-old, who was sentenced to five years in 2006 for rape, has repeatedly violated the conditions since his release, with the latest breach prompting his re-incarceration.
At Derby Crown Court, Newbold told the judge, “thank you sir, God bless,” as he was taken back to custody.
He expressed a preference for prison over life in the community.
The court heard that Newbold has been involved in multiple breaches; he corrected the judge when asked, confirming this was his 11th breach of his notification requirements.
During the hearing, Recorder Jason Macadam asked if Newbold needed legal representation, to which he replied, “I don’t need representation, sir, because I am guilty.” The judge inquired whether this was his ninth breach; Newbold responded, “It’s 11, sir.” The judge explained, “This is now your chance to ask for a reduction in your sentence but I don’t think you want me to do that, do you?” To which Newbold replied, “No, thank you.” The judge commented, “Sadly your wife died in 2017, which I rather imagine is why you prefer to be in prison.
Mr.
Newbold, I know you are deliberately breaching the notification requirements because you want to stay in custody, and you can carry on doing that.” He advised him to consider developing a plan to live in the community, suggesting he visit the nearest probation office when released and ask for help if struggling.
Newbold responded with gratitude, saying, “Thank you very much, sir, God bless.” Prosecutor Caroline Bradley told the court that Newbold, who has no fixed address, was initially jailed for five years for rape.
As part of his conviction, he is required to register as a sex offender and inform police of his whereabouts within three days of any change.
However, she explained that Newbold has repeatedly failed to do so.
The court was told that after his most recent release on November 5, he did not register an address, leading to his subsequent arrest and remand into custody.
She noted, “He states that he wants to go back to prison and therefore is not inclined to comply.” Newbold pleaded guilty to breaching the sex offender register conditions and was sentenced to an additional 12 months.
He was also ordered to pay a £156 victim surcharge.
