MARK MCINTOSH SHOCKS EDINBURGH WITH DOMESTIC ABUSE AND THREATS CASE

On the 7th of March, 2025, Mark McIntosh, a 51-year-old resident of Edinburgh, pleaded guilty to charges brought under the Domestic Abuse Act 2018, as well as to threatening and abusive behavior towards another individual.

The court proceedings revealed a disturbing history of violence and control exerted by McIntosh over his former partner, Louise Martin.

McIntosh’s guilty plea came ahead of his sentencing, which was deferred until the 3rd of April, 2025, allowing for further legal considerations.

The case centered around multiple assaults inflicted by McIntosh during their three-year relationship, which was marked by escalating violence and manipulation.

Louise Martin, the victim, recounted the brutal nature of the abuse she endured, including being battered and bitten, injuries so severe that they left her permanently disfigured.

Louise shared her harrowing experience, stating, “A domestic abuse fund would have helped me so much and I could have left him quicker.

He put me £10,000 in debt so I didn’t have enough money to even think about moving.” Her account detailed how she met McIntosh through a mutual friend in 2016, and how he quickly began to introduce himself as her boyfriend just two hours after their first date.

Despite her initial feelings of unease, her friends encouraged her, noting that she seemed happy and hadn’t smiled like that in a long time.

Over time, McIntosh’s controlling behavior intensified, leading to the isolation of Louise from her family and friends.

She explained, “The abuse was horrific, but I had lost everyone around me because of him and I was completely reliant on him.” Her injuries became more severe, including a blood clot in her eye and a bruised chest bone, yet she concealed much of the physical trauma to hide the truth from others.

The turning point in her ordeal came when Louise managed to secretly record a phone call with McIntosh, which she then handed over to the police.

This evidence proved crucial in securing his arrest.

In July 2023, following a trial at Edinburgh’s sheriff court, McIntosh was found guilty of multiple charges, including assault, preventing Louise from leaving her house, and obstructing her from attending work.

The court sentenced him to 200 hours of unpaid work, imposed a 24-month suspension order, and issued a five-year non-harassment order to prevent further contact.

Despite the legal victory, Louise expressed her ongoing emotional distress, saying, “I’ll never get over it.

I still have nightmares.

I’m looking behind me all the time.” She continues to grapple with the physical and emotional scars left by her abuser, emphasizing the persistent fear she lives with: “Someone like him will never change and it angers and frightens me that he is free to do this to someone else.” Her story highlights the devastating impact of domestic abuse and the importance of support and justice for victims in Edinburgh and beyond.
