MAN PUNCHES GIRLFRIEND AFTER DRUNKEN VALENTINE'S NIGHT

Valentine's Day ended unromantically after a couple sank Sambuca and went to a house at 3am.

Mark May's girlfriend sat down to watch TV when she thought there was a water leak, a court heard.

She went to the hall to find May urinating on the floor and shouted: "What on earth are you doing?

There's a toilet there." He then launched an attack on her, said Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

"He punched her in the face, grabbed her hair and pushed her head against a wall, causing her nose to split.

"He then said he was sorry but she said 'I am going to call the police,'" said Mr Jerath.

When a photograph of the woman's face was shown in court, May put his head in his hands.

He admitted assault by beating on February 15, his 43rd birthday.

The case was adjourned to await a probation report and he was granted bail before he is due to be sentenced on February 27.

Ian Carter, mitigating, told the court: "The issue here is drink and that is both of them.

"They went out on Valentine's night and carried on into the early hours.

He has no recollection of what happened when they left the pub." When they stayed indoors to drink, there were never any problems but there were difficulties when they went out.

He said that the previous prison sentence was no benefit.

May received no treatment for his alcohol problem and the woman got back with him within two days.

Mr Carter added: "When they are in pubs, they start drinking Sambuca." As a condition of his bail, May was banned from contacting the woman or going on the Newark street where she lives.

He was also banned from entering licensed premises and told presiding magistrate Norman King: "Not a problem, sir." He must live in Tolney Lane, Newark.
