MARK LOTEN AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES IN MAESTEG AND LITTLEHAMPTON

Mark Loten, aged 51, who currently resides on Dorset Close, was convicted at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday of committing two indecent assaults and a rape against a woman who was known to him. The crimes took place at a different address in Littlehampton back in 1991. Following the verdict, Loten was sentenced to a total of eleven years in prison, comprising two years for one of the indecent assaults, three years for the second assault, and six years for the rape. All three sentences are to be served concurrently, meaning he will serve the longest term of six years.

In an exclusive interview with the Gazette, the woman, who for legal reasons cannot be identified, shared her harrowing experience and the emotional toll it has taken on her over the past 23 years. She described her ordeal as a living nightmare, explaining, "What he did to me is something that I will never forget. It has been really hard to get over. I felt like I had no one to turn to, and it has been something that has stayed with me for 23 years."

Despite the long passage of time, she expressed relief at finally being able to speak out and seek justice. She emphasized that sharing her story was a significant and difficult step, but ultimately a necessary one. Her decision to approach the police was prompted by a broader societal shift in recent years, where a rising number of historic abuse cases are coming to light and being prosecuted. She encouraged others who have endured similar experiences to come forward, reassuring them that it is never too late to seek help. "Talking about it to the police can be really difficult, but they are very understanding and supportive. I couldn’t recommend reaching out more," she stated.

The investigation into Loten’s crimes was conducted by Sussex Police, who revealed that the allegations were only reported to them in 2012, more than two decades after the offences occurred. A police spokesman described the investigation as thorough and emphasized that authorities take all reports seriously, regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes were committed. The spokesman added, "It demonstrates our commitment to achieving justice for victims of all ages and circumstances."

Throughout the legal process, the victim received extensive support from Sussex Police, including welfare and counseling services. Her testimony and cooperation proved crucial in securing Loten’s conviction. Reflecting on her experience, she stated that she can now begin to move forward with her life. "The memories of what he did will always be with me, but now I can move on and get on with my life. For me, justice has been done," she concluded.
