MARK HOLMES AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN NEWPORT
A man with a troubling criminal history has been sentenced to prison after committing a disturbing sexual assault in his hometown of Newport.Mark Holmes, aged 38, was convicted of sexually attacking a woman inside her own residence, an incident that has left the victim emotionally devastated and profoundly affected.
The assault took place during the summer of 2021, when Holmes unexpectedly jumped onto his victim, forcibly covered her mouth with his hand to silence her, and carried out two separate sexual assaults.
During the ordeal, Holmes also engaged in verbal abuse, further humiliating the woman and adding to her trauma.
The nature of his attack and the violence involved highlight the severity of the crime.
Following a trial in May, a jury found Holmes guilty of two counts of assault by penetration.
His criminal record includes a prior conviction for rape, which dates back to 2002, when he was still a teenager.
Specifically, Holmes, then 17, was sentenced to 18 months of detention and training order at Cardiff Crown Court after raping a 15-year-old girl on his 17th birthday.
Owen Williams, the prosecutor, presented a compelling victim impact statement during the court proceedings, expressing the profound effects of the assault.
The victim reported feeling like a stranger in her own home, afraid to leave her house, and living in constant fear.
She described her emotional well-being as being deeply harmed, questioning why she had been subjected to such trauma.
Holmes’ defense attorney, Susan Ferrier, acknowledged that there was little room for mitigation but noted that Holmes claimed he was not responsible for the crimes.
She also suggested that Holmes has a capacity for kindness and caring, implying complexity in his character.
The presiding judge, Recorder Mark Cotter KC, delivered a stern verdict, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense.
He pointed out Holmes’ violent overpowering of the victim and referenced his previous rape conviction, which, despite being many years old, remains troubling and relevant.
Holmes was sentenced to serve a total of eight years and six months in prison.
Under the terms of his sentence, he must serve at least two-thirds before being eligible for parole or release on licence.
Additionally, Holmes will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a legal requirement following his conviction and sentencing.
