MARK FORDHAM SENTENCED IN EDINBURGH FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND ONLINE ABUSE FROM CAMBRIDGE
In March 2014, a disturbing case unfolded involving Mark Fordham, a man with connections to both Cambridge and Edinburgh, who engaged in heinous acts of child sexual abuse and online exploitation. The case was brought before the High Court in Edinburgh, revealing a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned over several months and involved multiple criminal offenses.
Fordham, aged 43 at the time, initially posed as a teenage boy on an online chatroom, where he established contact with a 14-year-old girl.
During their conversations, he made inappropriate comments, including telling her that he found her 'sexy.' The girl, who was a schoolgirl, believed she was communicating with someone her own age.
Fordham’s deception was eventually uncovered when he met her in person in the heart of Edinburgh, where he admitted to his true age.
During this meeting, he attempted to kiss her, but she pushed him away, clearly uncomfortable with his advances.
Despite this initial rejection, the communication between Fordham and the girl continued.
They arranged to meet again, during which Fordham presented her with a birthday card that read, 'to my very special girlfriend on your birthday,' further blurring the lines of appropriate conduct.
Fordham, who was unemployed and from the Cambridge area, had moved to Edinburgh the previous year.
He offered to buy the girl anything she wanted and, on one occasion, insisted she take £30 from him, indicating an attempt to manipulate and groom her.
His abusive behavior escalated when he took the girl to the address of his former partner in Edinburgh, where he engaged in sexual activity with her.
Fordham claimed that the girl was a relative who had nowhere else to go, a false justification that his former partner found unsettling.
She asked him to leave the flat, but he ignored her pleas.
The following day, she secretly recorded a conversation by hiding an MP3 player in her shoe, which captured groaning noises and Fordham’s voice discussing losing her virginity.
When confronted with the recording, both Fordham and the girl denied any wrongdoing, and the girl was asked to leave the flat.
Further revelations emerged when the girl confided in friends that she had secretly brought Fordham into her home in West Lothian.
Unbeknownst to her family, Fordham was staying there without their knowledge.
One of her friends discovered him hiding behind a wardrobe after the family dog betrayed his presence.
The girl’s involvement with Fordham ended in November of the previous year, but he continued to contact her through online messaging apps, pleading for her to take him back and making inappropriate comments such as, 'U ken how much I love your wee body.' In December, authorities uncovered more evidence when her father and grandmother entered her bedroom, which they normally did not access.
They found a bag containing men's clothing and a suitcase filled with papers and items belonging to Fordham.
The girl disclosed to her grandfather that she had met Fordham through a chat room on an app she had downloaded, prompting police to be called.
When Fordham was detained, law enforcement seized his phone, which contained videos revealing some of his sexual abuse of the girl.
Further investigation showed that he had been sharing explicit images with others via messaging services, including one individual who asked to 'trade yng girl pix,' to whom Fordham sent pictures of sexual acts.
Fordham admitted to breaching child protection laws and sexually abusing the girl between July and November of the previous year.
He also pleaded guilty to distributing indecent images of a child in December.
His criminal record includes sixteen convictions in England and Wales for theft, dishonesty, assault causing actual bodily harm, and road traffic offenses, as well as convictions in Scotland for similar offenses.
His history of offending underscores a pattern of dangerous and predatory behavior.
During the court proceedings, Fordham appeared with the aid of crutches.
The judge, Lord Bannatyne, ordered that he be placed on the sex offenders’ register and remanded him in custody to allow for a background report to be prepared ahead of sentencing scheduled for the following month.
On November 9, 2023, at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Matthews imposed a Life Restriction Order on Fordham after he pled guilty to two attempted child sex offenses.
Additionally, Fordham was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months in prison.
The judge emphasized the severity of Fordham’s actions and his long history of criminal conduct, highlighting the danger he posed to the community.
In his sentencing remarks, Lord Matthews noted Fordham’s guilty plea to charges including attempting to meet a child for unlawful sexual activity and distributing sexual images.
The judge detailed Fordham’s extensive criminal record, which includes convictions for sexual offenses, violence, and dishonesty, and stressed the high risk he continues to pose.
The court also considered the potential scenarios of future offenses, which could cause serious harm, and the failure of previous risk management measures to mitigate this danger.
Ultimately, the court decided to impose an Order for Lifelong Restriction, with a punishment part of two years and three months, meaning Fordham will be subject to strict supervision and monitoring for the foreseeable future.
The sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing threat he represents to society.
