MARK FERGUSON FROM CARLISLE SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND ROBBERY PLOT
In April 2017, a man from Carlisle named Mark Ferguson faced serious legal consequences following a series of criminal investigations that uncovered disturbing evidence on his mobile device. The case, which involved both a robbery conspiracy and the possession of child abuse images, highlights the severity of his offenses and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address such crimes.
It all began when Twitter alerted Cumbria police about concerning images associated with an account registered to Ferguson.
Although these reports did not lead to immediate criminal charges, they prompted further scrutiny of Ferguson’s activities.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered that Ferguson, then 24 years old, was implicated in a broader criminal scheme involving a violent robbery in Carlisle in 2014.
Specifically, he was identified as one of three men who instructed an unidentified individual armed with a knife to carry out a robbery targeting a local businessman.
The police’s efforts culminated in Ferguson’s arrest, during which a mobile phone was seized.
A forensic examination of the device revealed a disturbing collection of 96 illegal images depicting children.
Among these, six were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse and exploitation.
These findings underscored the gravity of Ferguson’s misconduct and prompted additional charges.
Ferguson was already serving a prison sentence of four and a half years, handed down by a judge in January of the same year after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery.
However, his legal troubles did not end there.
He subsequently pleaded guilty to charges related to the possession and creation of indecent photographs of children, resulting in a separate six-month jail sentence.
This sentence was handed down during a court hearing where Ferguson was brought back to face the new charges.
Despite the additional sentence, it was made clear that Ferguson’s release date would not be affected, and he is expected to be released in April of the following year.
In addition to his imprisonment, Ferguson was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years.
He was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which imposes strict conditions aimed at protecting the public from potential future offenses.
Ferguson’s case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in tackling both violent crime and the exploitation of vulnerable children, especially when offenders like Ferguson are involved in multiple criminal activities within the Carlisle area.
