MARK DEADFIELD FROM READING SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AND SAFETY ORDER BREACHES

In a case that has shocked the local community of Reading, Mark Deadfield, a resident of Heroes Walk, was found guilty of possessing and hiding indecent images of children, as well as breaching court-imposed restrictions designed to prevent such offenses.

The incident dates back to March 2022, but the investigation and subsequent sentencing reveal a troubling pattern of behavior that persisted over several years.

Deadfield, who is 53 years old, had previously been subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) issued in 2012.

This order explicitly prohibited him from owning any pictures of children, except in cases where he had explicit permission from the children's parents or guardians, or if the images involved his own young relatives.

Additionally, he was banned from possessing cameras altogether.

Despite these restrictions, residents living near Deadfield reported seeing him taking photographs with a small, silver device in 2017, raising suspicions about his compliance with the court's directives.

In October 2018, law enforcement authorities conducted a search of Deadfield’s residence following concerns raised by neighbors.

During the search, officers uncovered multiple devices, including a laptop that Deadfield had taken measures to conceal.

Notably, he had stored this laptop inside a safe designed to resemble a book, a tactic likely intended to evade detection.

The police investigation revealed that the laptop contained 13 Category A indecent images of children, which are classified as the most severe type of child abuse material, along with 11 Category C images.

Furthermore, the authorities discovered photographs of children that were not indecent, which Deadfield had taken himself, indicating a broader pattern of inappropriate behavior.

Reading Crown Court heard that Deadfield had attempted to hide his illicit material by leaving devices with a friend and storing them in the disguised safe.

Despite his claims of compliance and efforts to appear rehabilitated, the court was informed that he had violated the terms of his SOPO and court orders through deceitful actions.

Her Honour Judge Nott described the Category A images found on Deadfield’s laptop as the “worst kind” of indecent images, emphasizing the severity of the offense.

During sentencing, Judge Nott expressed her concerns about Deadfield’s behavior and the risks he posed to the community.

She stated, “The fact you have [breached your SOPO] using deceitful behaviour and that you seem to rely on your learning difficulties to excuse what you have done means you pose a significant risk to children.” The judge further noted that Deadfield had paid lip service to court-mandated rehabilitative courses but had not genuinely complied with the restrictions meant to prevent further offenses.

She concluded that there was “no realistic prospect of rehabilitation” for him.

As a result, Deadfield was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

The charges included two counts of possessing indecent images, one count of breaching the SOPO, and one count of failing to register as a sex offender.

The case underscores the ongoing concerns about individuals who violate court orders designed to protect children and highlights the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community awareness in preventing such offenses from recurring.
