MARK CUSKIN SHIELDS VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN SOUTH SHIELDS DESPITE CHILD PORN FIND
In July 2004, a disturbing case emerged involving Mark Cuskin, a man from South Shields who was found to possess an extensive collection of child pornography. Despite the severity of his actions, local authorities made the controversial decision to allow Cuskin to maintain his employment at a centre dedicated to supporting children who had experienced sexual abuse.Initially, Cuskin, aged 21 at the time, was employed as a clerk within the South Tyneside Council’s facilities. The social services department assured the public that he had no direct contact with vulnerable children, which was used to justify his continued employment. However, this reassurance was met with widespread outrage once it was revealed that Cuskin was working in a building where children were cared for, had access to highly sensitive and confidential files concerning these children, and even contributed to the compilation of reports on children deemed to be at risk.
His employment was under a six-month contract at the Laygate Centre in South Shields when police uncovered a shocking collection of illegal material. The police investigation revealed that Cuskin possessed approximately 14,000 videos and images, some of which depicted babies being subjected to abuse. The discovery prompted immediate action from law enforcement authorities, who alerted social services about the situation.
Despite the gravity of the evidence, Cuskin continued working at the centre for an additional five months until he was formally charged by the police. The legal proceedings culminated in Cuskin being sentenced to three years in prison by a judge, who found him guilty of possessing and viewing child pornography. The authorities defended their decision, claiming that Cuskin was never in direct contact with children during his employment.
Nevertheless, the decision to allow him to remain in his role sparked intense criticism. A senior insider within the council expressed their disbelief and frustration, stating, “It defies belief he was allowed to carry on.” The case has raised serious questions about the safeguarding procedures in place at the time and the oversight of individuals working in environments with vulnerable children in South Shields.
