MARK BEST AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN SHEFFIELD
A known sex offender from Sheffield who attempted to engage with what he believed were underage girls was ultimately caught in a sting operation by paedophile hunters.Mark Best, aged 57 and residing on Baslow Road in the Totley area of Sheffield, had a troubling criminal history involving sexual offences prior to his recent actions.
During a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court, prosecutors revealed that Best had engaged in online discussions that involved explicit sexual conversations with decoys set up by volunteer groups aiming to identify individuals seeking to exploit minors.
The court was told that Best’s interactions came to light when a group of dedicated volunteers created online decoys designed to lure those with unlawful inclinations.
Best initially believed he was communicating with two underage girls and engaged in explicit exchanges with both.
One of these decoys was presented as a 13-year-old girl, with whom Best discussed topics ranging from his genitalia and spanking to cuddling, unzipping his trousers, oral sex, sexual intercourse, and his awareness that such actions could land him in prison.
Specifically, Best discussed masturbating and made plans to meet one of the decoys at a McDonald's restaurant located within a retail park in Chesterfield.
However, he later changed his mind and told the decoy that she should be with peers her own age, indicating some awareness of the inappropriateness of his intentions.
Nevertheless, shortly after, Best contacted the decoy again, expressing regret for not following through on the meet-up and requesting to arrange another encounter.
In addition to this, another volunteer set up a decoy posing as a 12-year-old girl from Derby.
Best contacted this decoy as well and engaged in further sexualized conversations, displaying a pattern of concerning predatory behavior.
The police intervened when Best attended a meeting staged by a different paedophile hunter group, where he believed he was going to meet an adult decoy.
Upon arrival, officers arrested him.
During the arrest, Best stated that he was glad to have been caught, and he appeared genuinely confused about his actions, asserting that he needed help.
Best eventually pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
These included two counts of attempting to arrange or facilitate a child sex offence through online communication between April and October 2022.
He also admitted to breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order during this period by using the internet to attempt to communicate with a child.
Court records highlighted that Best has an already extensive criminal record, with previous convictions related to non-penetrative sexual touching of a female, breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and attempts to communicate with a minor for sexual purposes.
During the hearing, Best’s defence acknowledged his ongoing issues and expressed the hope that he would seek help while incarcerated.
The prosecution’s portrayal was of a man struggling with a persistent attraction to young girls, whose actions had posed a clear risk to children.
The judge, Recorder Abdul Iqbal KC, sentenced Best to four years in prison.
Recognizing the danger he posed, the court ordered that he must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release.
Additionally, he will serve a further three years on supervised licence following his release.
As part of the measures to prevent further offences, Best was also subject to an extended Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will remain in effect until 2031.
