MARK BANNER FROM WEDNESBURY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND INDECENT IMAGES
In January 2007, Mark Keith Banner, a 41-year-old man from Wednesbury, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term for possessing and sharing indecent images of children, some depicting girls being raped. Banner pleaded guilty to all 31 charges, which included making and distributing abusive pictures. During his trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Judge Michael Challinor described Banner as a significant risk to the public and imposed an indeterminate sentence for public protection.Regarding the specific offence involving a nine-year-old girl, which Banner admitted, of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, he received a five-year sentence. Throughout the hearing, Banner showed signs of distress, clutching his chest and staring at the floor.
Judge Challinor commented: “The indeterminate sentence may be for many years and in some cases it is indistinguishable from a life sentence. The worrying aspect of this case is the escalation since you started in 2004. In the end, you had gathered a significant amount of the most degrading images and then, in the case of this young girl, you terrified her. Plainly, it has changed her personality. Her mother says she is frightened of men and cannot sleep at night.”
The court also learned that Banner, who resided with his parents on Johnson Road and had worked most of his life in foundries, struggled to form relationships with women and preferred talking to children online. Under the username ‘Stargazer,’ he falsely claimed to be 15 years old.
The prosecution detailed how Banner convinced his young victim to remove her clothing and threatened to send a video of her to her friends and visit her home to deliver the footage if she did not stay in contact.
Defence lawyer Mr Jas Mann stated: “He was open about what he had done when arrested and still maintains he did not know the girl was nine years’ old. He has an interest in schoolgirls but not in pre-pubescent children. Members of his family are ashamed of him.”
