MARK AGAR FROM COWES SENTENCED TO NINE AND A HALF YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING YOUNG GIRLS IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT

In a case that has shocked the community of Cowes and the wider Isle of Wight, Mark Agar, a 47-year-old man residing on Ash Grove, was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for a series of disturbing sexual offences involving three young girls. The crimes, which spanned over a period of time, included multiple counts of indecent assault, sexual assault, and the unlawful act of encouraging a child under 16 to participate in sexual activities.

Mark Agar appeared before the Isle of Wight Crown Court in March 2013 to face these serious charges. Initially, he entered a plea of not guilty, denying all allegations. However, midway through the trial, Agar changed his plea to guilty, admitting to seven counts of indecent assault, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of causing a minor under the age of 16 to engage in sexual acts. The abuse reportedly began when one of the victims was just nine years old, highlighting the severity and long-term impact of his actions.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Sarah Munro QC addressed the court and emphasized the gravity of Agar’s conduct. She remarked, “You denied all the offences and two of the witnesses had to give evidence to a jury. You caused them to publicly relive those offences.” The judge further stated, “You caused one of the victims untold psychological damage, which was apparent when she gave evidence.” She condemned the defendant’s actions as demonstrating a profound level of depravity, noting that Agar had robbed the three girls of their childhoods. The judge acknowledged the immense harm caused but also recognized the bravery of the victims, who could now face the world with their heads held high, knowing they had spoken the truth.

Elizabeth Bussey-Jones, representing Agar, provided context about his background, explaining that past traumatic experiences from his own youth had affected his perception of reality. She expressed remorse on his behalf, stating, “His feeling of revulsion and shame for what he did is very clear and is entirely remorseful.”

As part of his sentence, Agar was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm. The case has left a lasting impact on the victims and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children from abuse in the Isle of Wight community.
