The tragic events unfolded on September 24, 2007, when Kompusova called emergency services at 1:38 pm from her home. Paramedics arrived to find the infant pale and unresponsive, lying on the sofa. During the trial, evidence indicated that some of Joseph’s fractures, including a broken arm, had occurred weeks prior, likely from twisting or gripping forces. The rib fracture was attributed to a severe squeezing motion, and additional injuries to his thigh bone and lower leg dated back three weeks, with the skull fracture resulting from a direct impact in the days leading up to his death.

Kompusova blamed her partner, Joseph Skripka, for the injuries, but he was never brought to trial as he was at work at the time of Joseph’s death. The case has raised serious concerns about the adequacy of child protection measures and the failure of health services to detect the signs of ongoing abuse, highlighting the tragic consequences of systemic shortcomings.
