MARIA KOMPUSOVA SHOCKINGLY ABUSES AND KILLS THREE-MONTH-OLD BABY IN WALTHAMSTOW

In a tragic case that has shocked the community of Walthamstow, east London, a young mother named Maria Kompusova, aged 22, was convicted of causing the death of her three-month-old son, Joseph Kompus, after a series of brutal injuries inflicted over several weeks. The heartbreaking incident unfolded at the family’s modest residence on Hoe Street, where the infant succumbed to injuries sustained from severe head trauma in September 2007.

Joseph’s injuries were nothing short of catastrophic. Medical examinations revealed extensive brain damage, with the injuries being so severe that they resembled those typically seen in victims of high-impact car crashes. X-ray scans further uncovered multiple fractures across his tiny body, including breaks to his legs, skull, one arm, and a rib. These injuries pointed to a pattern of ongoing abuse, with the skull fracture and brain injuries indicating violent handling or impact.

Maria Kompusova, who was 22 years old at the time and resided in Walthamstow, was found guilty of manslaughter last month after being initially cleared of murder charges. During her sentencing at the Old Bailey, Judge Richard Hawkins expressed his uncertainty about the exact circumstances of the injuries, stating, “It is not known from the evidence what you did.” The judge also referenced expert testimony suggesting that the brain injury was consistent with rough handling, although the case was characterized by ambiguity regarding whether the injuries resulted from a single traumatic event or ongoing abuse.

It was revealed that Joseph had suffered five previous fractures, but the court was unable to establish who was responsible for those injuries. The prosecution argued that the injuries to Joseph’s head and body were the result of a single traumatic incident, but the defense highlighted her history as a caring mother to an older child, attempting to mitigate her culpability.

Kompusova and her partner, 23-year-old Joseph Skripka, had moved to Britain seeking better opportunities. The family lived in cramped conditions above a shop, with Skripka working long hours in a laundry to support them. Despite her contact with health professionals during Joseph’s brief life, the system failed to identify the risks he faced. A serious case review conducted in Waltham Forest criticized the lack of systematic information collection and analysis, which could have potentially prevented the tragedy. The report emphasized that opportunities to intervene and protect Joseph were missed, and called for significant improvements in child protection protocols within the borough.

It remains unclear whether Joseph’s health was ever thoroughly reviewed by health authorities in Haringey, where the family also had contact with medical professionals. The tragic events unfolded on September 24, 2007, when Kompusova called emergency services at 1:38 pm from her home. Paramedics arrived to find the infant pale and unresponsive, lying on the sofa. During the trial, evidence indicated that some of Joseph’s fractures, including a broken arm, had occurred weeks prior, likely from twisting or gripping forces. The rib fracture was attributed to a severe squeezing motion, and additional injuries to his thigh bone and lower leg dated back three weeks, with the skull fracture resulting from a direct impact in the days leading up to his death.

Kompusova blamed her partner, Joseph Skripka, for the injuries, but he was never brought to trial as he was at work at the time of Joseph’s death. The case has raised serious concerns about the adequacy of child protection measures and the failure of health services to detect the signs of ongoing abuse, highlighting the tragic consequences of systemic shortcomings.
