MARCUS HAMLIN'S BRUTAL ATTACK IN SHEFFIELD LEAVES TWO VICTIMS WITH LIFE-CHANGING INJURIES
In a harrowing incident that unfolded in Sheffield, a man named Marcus Hamlin was convicted of a violent assault that left a woman and a teenage girl seriously injured. The attack, which involved the use of a meat cleaver and a kitchen knife, took place in the early hours of August 30, 2022, on Harborough Way, Sheffield.
Police responded to reports of a violent disturbance just after midnight, discovering a woman in her 30s with severe injuries.
She was found in a critically injured state, requiring immediate medical attention.
Nearby, a teenage girl was located inside a property, suffering from a significant head wound.
The injuries sustained by both victims were extensive, with over 30 separate injuries documented, most inflicted by the kitchen knife and meat cleaver used during the assault.
Marcus Hamlin, aged 31 and residing on Dawlands Close, Sheffield, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with causing grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Initially, he faced two counts of attempted murder, which he denied.
However, during the court proceedings, Hamlin pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of causing GBH.
The sentencing took place at Sheffield Crown Court, where Judge Richardson delivered a stern verdict.
Hamlin was sentenced to 14 years and six months in prison.
The judge also declared Hamlin a 'dangerous offender,' which means he will serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole, rather than the usual half.
An extended license period of five years was also imposed, reflecting the severity of his actions.
According to the court, Hamlin's violence began with him physically assaulting the woman, identified as complainant A, with punches and blows.
The assault escalated when he produced a knife and attacked the teenage girl, referred to as complainant B.
The judge recounted that Hamlin struck B with the knife, causing her to fall to the ground, and then attempted to strangle her, making it difficult for her to breathe.
Both victims tried to escape Hamlin's grasp, but he continued his assault, stabbing A and B multiple times.
During the incident, Hamlin inflicted severe stab wounds on both victims.
The court heard that he stabbed B twice more even after she pretended to be unconscious.
Police arrived shortly afterward, finding Hamlin with a wound to his wrist.
Hamlin claimed to police that he had been attacked by A and B, asserting that B had attacked him with a knife.
The injuries sustained by the victims were described in detail during the hearing.
Complainant A suffered multiple lacerations to her head, neck, face, left leg, right elbow, and both hands.
Her head injuries included a skull fracture and a full-thickness laceration to her cheek.
The injuries to her hand were described as life-changing, requiring plastic surgery.
Complainant B also sustained multiple deep lacerations across her face, scalp, shoulders, left forearm, and fingers, with one scalp wound measuring six centimeters.
Both women were left with permanent scarring, which may have lasting cosmetic implications.
Judge Richardson emphasized the brutality of the attack, highlighting the extent of the injuries and the danger posed by Hamlin's actions.
The court's decision reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need to protect the public from individuals deemed a significant risk due to their violent behavior.
