MARC WATKINS FROM NEWPORT ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE HAVING OVER 5,000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the community of Newport, 24-year-old Marc James Watkins was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images of children, totaling more than 5,000 still and moving pictures stored on devices at his residence.The disturbing discovery was made during a police raid conducted at his home on Deer Park Drive, Newport, on November 9, 2016, which was initially related to an investigation involving his brother.
During the police search, Watkins voluntarily approached officers and disclosed that he had images of children stored on his electronic devices.
A detailed examination of his laptop and a hard drive revealed a horrifying cache: 1,000 images classified as Category A, indicating the most severe abuse material; 1,167 images categorized as Category B; and 3,094 images falling under Category C.
Among these images, police identified a baby being abused, as well as photographs depicting children being given alcohol prior to their victimization.
Further investigations uncovered that Watkins had shared 102 of these images across 17 separate conversations on the messaging platform Kik.
The police analysis of these exchanges revealed that Watkins had been communicating with young boys, some as young as 13 years old.
These conversations included requests for sexual images, with Watkins asking the boys to send him explicit pictures of themselves.
In one disturbing exchange, Watkins discussed the possibility of meeting a 13-year-old boy in Liverpool.
In another, he discussed with a 14-year-old boy the idea of adopting a male child for the purpose of abuse.
Watkins was charged with multiple offenses, including three counts of making indecent images of children, three counts of distributing such images, and four counts of attempting to cause or incite a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity.
During a police interview, Watkins admitted to viewing indecent images over a period of five to six years, dating back to 2011.
However, he denied having a sexual interest in school-aged children.
His case was brought before Shrewsbury Crown Court, where prosecutor Ben Lawrence outlined the details of the investigation.
Despite the severity of his crimes, Judge Peter Barrie sentenced Watkins to a two-year community order, citing exceptional circumstances.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, stating, “This is all very serious.
What you need to understand is that these images of children appear as a result of that child being abused.” Judge Barrie also acknowledged Watkins’ past victimization, noting that he exhibited traits of autism, PTSD, and depression.
As part of his sentence, Watkins will undergo 45 days of rehabilitation, pay a fine of £1,000, cover £200 in court costs, and be subject to a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct.
