MARYPORT MAN MARC MAISKEY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN CUMBRIA
In October 2018, a man from Maryport, identified as 34-year-old Marc Anthony Maisey, was formally sentenced after engaging in disturbing online child sex crimes. The case drew significant attention due to the nature of his offenses and the circumstances surrounding his arrest and prosecution.Maisey had been actively communicating with what he believed to be a 13-year-old girl over the internet. Over the course of nearly a month, he persistently made sexual comments, sent explicit images of himself, and requested nude photographs from the supposed minor. Despite the girl repeatedly informing him that she was only 13 years old, Maisey continued his inappropriate and illegal exchanges. It was only later that he discovered he was actually communicating with an undercover police officer, not a minor.
Following his arrest, Maisey faced charges in court. He admitted to two serious offenses: one for attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child under 16, and another for attempting to induce a child to watch a sexual act. These criminal acts took place during July and August of that year. The court proceedings revealed that Maisey, who was described as a man of previously good character and a father of two young children, showed remorse for his actions.
Judge Peter Davies presided over the case and, after considering the mitigating factors, decided to suspend a 16-month prison sentence for two years. As part of his sentence, Maisey, who resides at Parkside, Crosby, Maryport, is required to complete an accredited sex offenders’ treatment program and undergo rehabilitation. Additionally, he is mandated to register as a sex offender and adhere to a sexual harm prevention order for a period of seven years. These measures aim to monitor and prevent any future offending behavior.
Earlier in September 2018, Maisey had already admitted to similar charges at Carlisle Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to attempting to communicate sexually with a person he believed to be a teenage girl and to trying to cause her to watch a sexual act. His actions were alleged to have occurred between July 11 and August 9, 2018. The court was informed that Maisey thought he was speaking to a 13-year-old girl, but in reality, he was communicating with an undercover officer.
Judge James Adkin ordered a pre-sentence report from the probation service to assess Maisey’s background and the extent of his offending. He was remanded in custody and was scheduled for sentencing on October 9. During the hearing, Judge Adkin made it clear that no promises could be made regarding the final sentence, and all options, including custody, remained open. As part of his guilty plea, Maisey was also instructed to sign the sex offenders’ register, a legal requirement for individuals convicted of such offenses.
Overall, the case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and the importance of legal measures to protect minors from predatory behavior. The community of Maryport and the wider Cumbria area continues to be vigilant against such crimes, emphasizing the need for awareness and preventative action.
