MANSOOR UDDIN'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN LUAN: TAXI DRIVER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS
In a disturbing series of events that shocked the community in Lucan, Mansoor Uddin, a 41-year-old taxi driver, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting three young women over a span of just three weeks during January and February of 2016.Uddin, a married man and father of three children, resided at Castleway, Adamstown in Lucan. He pleaded guilty to the charges on the morning of his trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in February, avoiding a lengthy trial process. The assaults began on January 30, 2016, when Uddin targeted a 19-year-old woman from Germany. Over the following weeks, he committed similar offenses against two other women aged 20 and 18, respectively, on February 16, 2016.
During the incidents, one of the victims managed to obtain part of Uddin’s car registration number as he sped away from the scene. Another victim attempted to photograph his identification, while the youngest of the three, an 18-year-old, called a friend while still in his taxi and provided her with Uddin’s name and part of his taxi registration number. She also tried to take a photograph of him, but he stopped her before she could succeed.
Authorities, including Gardaí, utilized GPS data from the Hailo taxi app to verify the routes taken by Uddin. The GPS coordinates confirmed that he traveled along the routes described by the victims, establishing a clear link between him and the assaults. Following his arrest, Uddin was formally charged, and the case drew significant public outrage. It was even raised in the Dáil last month after it was revealed that, as part of his bail conditions, Uddin was not allowed to have any passenger, male or female, seated in the front of his taxi.
Despite these restrictions, concerns persisted because Uddin was still operating as a taxi driver and was reportedly carrying women alone in the back seat. He was also subject to a curfew that prohibited him from working as a taxi driver during nighttime hours. Once he pleaded guilty in February, Gardaí confirmed that his taxi license was immediately revoked, preventing him from continuing his work in the industry.
Originally from Pakistan, Uddin is a father to three children— a young son and two teenage daughters. The case was considered particularly aggravated by Judge Sinead Ní Chulacháin, who noted that Uddin exploited his position as a taxi driver and was aware of the vulnerability of his victims. The judge also highlighted that Uddin refused to stop the taxi in two of the three cases and that the offenses occurred at night, further emphasizing the severity of his actions.
Uddin was sentenced to six years in prison, with the final year suspended, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the breach of trust involved in his offenses.
