SHEFFIELD MAN JAILED FOR VIOLENT DOMESTIC ASSAULT AND THREATS TO HIS PARTNER AND HER DAUGHTER

A violent boyfriend who hit his partner’s head with a wooden table, punched her with a makeshift knuckle duster, gouged her eye and threatened to pour boiling water on her has been jailed.

Malcolm Russell threatened to kill his ex partner during what a judge described as an “eruption of violence” and went on to hold a knife to her daughter’s throat.

Russell had been in a relationship with his former girlfriend for around eight years but Sheffield Crown Court heard the 59-year-old had become “controlling and belittling” and the relationship broke down.

Russell’s first attack on her took place in Sheffield City Centre on July 14, 2021, when he grabbed her left hand and bent her thumb back before saying “I will f***ing hurt you”, prosecutor Timothy Jacobs said.

The two went their separate ways but at around 7pm on the same day, Russell had found his victim asleep at his house and became enraged at her letting herself in.

Mr Jacobs said he grabbed her hair and told her: “You’re never going to do that again.

I’m going to kill you.

You’re going to die now.” Russell then picked up a small wooden table and hit his partner across the back of the head with it causing a gash to her scalp.

His victim managed to escape to the kitchen but Russell grabbed her hair once again and put his finger in her eye and hit her with a key between his fingers.

He then threatened to scald her with boiling water from a kettle.

Despite her pleas for Russell to call for an ambulance, he told her to get in the shower and she managed to escape to the safety of her daughter’s house.

Her daughter went to Russell’s home and confronted him about the injuries inflicted on her mum, prompting him to become angry.

Mr Jacobs said Russell “leapt from the sofa” and brandished a knife measuring 12-15cm before holding it to her neck and threatening to kill her.

His partner’s daughter managed to escape and waited for the police to arrive, Mr Jacobs added.

Vanessa Saxton, defending, said Russell suffers with diabetes and a number of health issues and would have “emotional outbursts” when in stressful situations.

She added that he offered his “sincere apologies” to his two victims.

Russell, of no fixed address, admitted one count of assault, one count of wounding with intent, one count of attempted wounding with intent and two counts of making threats to kill.

He was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison and banned from contacting his victims by way of a lifelong restraining order.
