MALCOLM FLYNN SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN ORMSKIRK

In a significant case that has shocked the community of Ormskirk and the surrounding West Lancashire area, Malcolm Flynn has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences committed nearly three decades ago. The 56-year-old, who resides on Holly Close in Westhead near Ormskirk, was convicted of eight separate counts involving indecent assault and acts of indecency against a young girl during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Flynn appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on November 11, where he faced the consequences of his actions. The court sentenced him to ten years of imprisonment, followed by an extended license period of three additional years, reflecting the severity and nature of his crimes. As part of his sentence, Flynn was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities post-release. Additionally, an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed, further restricting his conduct and contact with vulnerable individuals.

Throughout the proceedings, Flynn maintained his innocence, denying all allegations during police interviews. Prosecutor Robert Dudley outlined that the offences occurred on multiple occasions over a span of years. The victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, confided in her family about the abuse when she was 17. She initially told her uncle, who wanted to confront Flynn, but she begged him not to, fearing retaliation or further harm. She expressed her concern that her uncle might get into trouble if he intervened. Over time, she disclosed her experiences to other relatives, but it was not until early 2015 that she decided to report the matter to the police.

Judge Norman Wright, presiding over the case, highlighted that some of the offences Flynn was convicted of would now be classified as oral rape under current legal standards. The victim, who cannot be named publicly, delivered a heartfelt impact statement during the sentencing hearing. She described how the abuse has profoundly affected her life, leading to ongoing mental health struggles including obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and anxiety attacks. Her words conveyed the deep scars left by Flynn’s actions, with her stating: “I feel dirty and frightened and it has ruined my life. Most of the time I don’t want to be here and sometimes I think that everyone would be better off without me.”

This case underscores the long-lasting impact of sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims who come forward after many years. Flynn’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the legal system’s commitment to holding offenders accountable, regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes occurred.
