MAKHAN SINGH MAUJI CONVICTED OF SEXUAL OFFENCES IN HITCHIN SIKH GURDWARA
Makhan Singh Mauji, a 71-year-old Sikh priest and former Granthi, has been found guilty of a series of grave sexual offences that took place during the 1980s in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The crimes, which spanned from 1983 to 1987, were committed within the premises of a Sikh place of worship, a gurdwara, where Mauji held a position of trust and respect within the community.During his trial at Cambridge Crown Court, Mauji admitted to the criminal acts on the fourth day, acknowledging his guilt in the face of overwhelming evidence. The court heard that Mauji exploited his role as a spiritual leader to prey on vulnerable young victims, some as young as eight years old and others up to 14. The nature of the offences was particularly disturbing, involving multiple counts of indecent assault, attempted rape, and gross indecency with a child.
In total, Mauji was convicted on 11 counts of indecent assault, one count of attempted rape, and two counts of gross indecency with a minor. The judge overseeing the case described Mauji’s actions as causing 'deep emotional scars' and emphasized the significant breach of trust involved in the crimes. The court sentenced him to more than 24 years in prison, reflecting the severity of his offences. Additionally, a sexual harm prevention order was imposed, and Mauji was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for life.
The Hertfordshire police praised the bravery of the victims who came forward to report the abuse, acknowledging that their courage has been instrumental in bringing Mauji to justice. They expressed hope that the lengthy sentence will serve as some measure of closure for those affected. Representatives of the local Sikh community also responded to the verdict, condemning the crimes and emphasizing the importance of vigilance within the community to protect vulnerable members from predators. The case has sent shockwaves through the community in Hitchin, highlighting the devastating impact of betrayal by trusted figures in positions of spiritual authority.
