MAHMUT ICER FROM RUABON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRL IN WREXHAM AND ENGLAND

A man from Ruabon, Mahmut Icer, has been sentenced to prison following his conviction for the serious sexual abuse of a schoolgirl. The case was heard at Mold Crown Court on Thursday, where Icer, aged 43, appeared to face justice for his actions.

Mahmut Icer, who resides on Bryn Street in Ruabon, was found guilty by a jury of eight counts related to the exploitation and sexual misconduct involving a girl under the age of 16. The charges included causing or inciting a minor to engage in sexual activity and engaging in penetrative sexual acts with a girl under 16.

During the court proceedings, Judge Rhys Rowlands summarized the disturbing nature of the case, revealing that over a period of approximately 18 months starting in 2018, Icer systematically groomed the young girl. His grooming involved giving her gifts and money totaling around £2,800, which he used to manipulate her into a false sense of trust.

Evidence presented showed that Icer coerced the girl into sending him indecent videos and images of herself. In return, he sent her explicit videos and images of himself performing sexual acts. The grooming process culminated in Icer having sexual encounters with the girl in Wrexham, and he repeatedly traveled into England to meet her in hotels for sexual activity.

When the girl eventually expressed her desire for the abuse to stop, Icer responded with threats, warning her that he would show others the images she had sent him. This intimidation further deepened her sense of helplessness and fear.

Prosecutor Ffion Tomos read a victim impact statement from the girl, describing her feelings of self-hatred and her sense of being trapped and manipulated throughout the ordeal. The girl’s statement detailed how the abuse negatively affected her academic performance and overall well-being. She expressed that Icer had taken her innocence and provided her with a distorted view of love and relationships.

Additionally, a statement from the girl’s mother was read aloud in court. She described her daughter’s drastic change in behavior, noting that she lost weight, became withdrawn, and lost confidence. The mother also highlighted the impact of the court proceedings, which forced her to relive the traumatic experience and further affected her daughter’s mental health.

Defense lawyer Simon Rogers stated that Icer, who came to the UK from Turkey in 2001, is a father of two children. He expressed concern about the emotional toll the imprisonment would take on Icer and his family, emphasizing the difficulty of separation from his children.

Judge Rhys Rowlands addressed Icer directly, condemning his actions and noting the absence of remorse. The judge pointed out that Icer continued to blame the victim and suggested he was misled by her, despite the evidence of grooming and repeated sexual encounters. The judge emphasized that Icer cultivated the girl’s trust through gifts and money, which he used as leverage for sexual activity.

He described the acts as sordid and illegal, with Icer fully aware of the wrongfulness of his conduct. The judge highlighted the impact on the victim’s education, mental health, and confidence, condemning Icer’s behavior as deeply harmful.

In sentencing, the judge focused on the two primary offenses—those involving the initial and final sexual encounters—imposing a five-year prison term for the first and a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for the last, to be served concurrently. This results in a total sentence of seven and a half years.

Furthermore, Icer is required to register as a sex offender indefinitely, and he has been subject to a sexual harm prevention order. A restraining order was also issued, prohibiting him from contacting the victim for five years. Additionally, he has been placed on a barred list, preventing him from working with children or vulnerable adults in the future.
