LUKE THOMPSON'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN CARLISLE: VICTIM'S LIFE SHATTERED
In September 2018, a deeply disturbing case unfolded in Carlisle involving Luke Thompson, a 24-year-old man whose violent actions have left a lasting scar on his victim.The city’s crown court heard harrowing details of how Thompson subjected a young woman to a brutal and prolonged ordeal of kidnapping and sexual assault, actions that have profoundly impacted her life.
According to the court proceedings, Thompson forcibly abducted his victim in March 2015.
He approached her from behind, grabbing her by her scarf and dragging her into a flat located somewhere within Carlisle.
Inside the premises, his behavior grew increasingly erratic and disturbing.
Witnesses described how he smoked cigarettes and then deliberately stubbed them out on himself, displaying a reckless and manipulative demeanor.
The victim was visibly terrified, uncertain of what he might do next, as Thompson’s actions grew more bizarre.
At one point, Thompson used a broken CD box to cut himself, telling the victim, “Look, I am bleeding for you,” while laughing.
This unsettling act was followed by a period of calm, during which he apologized, but he refused to release her from his hold.
The court was told that Thompson then proceeded to brutally rape the woman, despite her desperate pleas for him to stop.
The assault was not a one-time event; he subjected her to multiple rapes during this ordeal, compounding her trauma.
When police eventually arrested Thompson, they discovered on his laptop a significant collection of indecent images.
Among these were 399 images classified as the most serious Category A, indicating extreme content involving children.
The court heard that Thompson was also in possession of numerous other illegal images, including 52 extreme pornographic pictures and 203 prohibited images of children.
In her impact statement, the victim described Thompson with words such as “manipulative, barbaric, and evil,” emphasizing the profound and lasting damage he inflicted.
She expressed that her suffering is beyond what any prison sentence could fully compensate for, stating, “He’s given me a life sentence because I am never going to forget what he has done.” Her words underscored the deep emotional scars left by the assault and the ongoing pain she endures.
Thompson’s defense lawyer, David Traynor, highlighted his client’s mental health issues, describing him as “not mature” and noting his willingness to engage with authorities to address his problems.
A background report suggested that Thompson was now better equipped to control his emotions, but the court was clear about the severity of his crimes.
Judge Mark Ainsworth, in delivering the sentence, acknowledged the impact of Thompson’s actions on his victim.
He described her impact statement as eloquent and emphasized that the effects of Thompson’s crimes would be felt by her for many years to come.
The court sentenced Thompson to 12 years in prison and ordered that he be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
Additionally, a lifelong restraining order was issued, prohibiting him from ever contacting his victim again.
Earlier in July 2018, Thompson had already admitted to a series of other serious offenses.
He pleaded guilty to making 836 indecent images of children, including 215 Category A images, as well as possessing 52 extreme pornographic images and 203 prohibited images of children.
Despite denying other allegations, he was convicted of kidnapping and raping the woman in Carlisle, though he was acquitted of two additional rape charges and a sexual assault.
He also faced and was cleared of allegations involving controlling and coercive behavior towards a second woman.
Thompson, who was previously residing on Cant Crescent in Carlisle but now has no fixed address, remains in custody.
He is scheduled to be sentenced for all his offenses on September 8, with the court indicating that he should prepare for a substantial custodial sentence, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
