LUKE DRIVER'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN GLOUCESTER: TEENAGER IMPRISONS 9-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN SPIDER-INFESTED CUPBOARD

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Gloucester, a teenage boy named Luke Driver was convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous acts committed against a young girl. The abuse took place over a span of nearly two years, from June 2009 to May 2011, when the victim was just nine and ten years old.

According to court proceedings, Driver, who was between 14 and 16 years old at the time, engaged in a pattern of sexual misconduct that included oral rape, attempted rape, and other sexual assaults. The prosecutor, Anjali Gohil, detailed how Driver initially began his misconduct by kissing the girl on the lips and inserting his tongue into her mouth, actions that marked the beginning of a disturbing escalation of abuse.

As the abuse continued, Driver's actions grew more aggressive. He eventually committed oral rape and made attempts to force full sexual intercourse upon the young girl. When she resisted or refused to comply with his demands, Driver resorted to frightening tactics to manipulate her into submission. One such method involved locking her inside a dark understairs cupboard that was filled with spiders, a terrifying environment that exploited her fears of darkness and insects. The girl was so frightened by this ordeal that she would often comply with Driver’s demands simply to escape the terrifying confinement.

During the sentencing, Judge Jamie Tabor QC addressed Driver directly, emphasizing the severity of his crimes. The judge remarked that if Driver had been an adult at the time, the sentence would have been close to ten years. He pointed out that the victim was still a child, unaware of sexual matters, yet was manipulated and terrified by Driver’s actions. The judge acknowledged that Driver was a troubled and immature boy at the time, suggesting that some of his actions might have been a form of sexual experimentation. However, he made it clear that Driver was fully aware that his conduct was wrong and that it was particularly wicked to involve a young girl in such acts.

In her victim impact statement, the girl described her realization of the wrongfulness of the abuse. She recounted how she only understood the severity of what had happened after reading articles and experiences in magazines. She expressed feelings of sickness and disgust about the abuse. The trauma led her to substance use at age 12, including smoking weed to cope with her feelings. She also revealed that in October 2015, she was so overwhelmed by depression that she attempted to overdose, nearly losing her life. The girl’s courage in coming forward and speaking out was a pivotal moment in her healing process.

In December of the same year, she confided in her mother about the abuse, which ultimately led to the legal proceedings against Driver. The case has brought to light the devastating impact of childhood sexual abuse and the importance of protecting vulnerable children from predators within their own communities.
