LUKE DORAN FROM WITHAM SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AND ATTACKS IN CHELMSFORD
In April 2018, a disturbing case involving Luke Doran, a resident of Witham, came to light following his conviction for a series of heinous sexual offences and violent attacks committed while he was incarcerated. Doran, aged 31, was first convicted on September 28, 2017, after a comprehensive trial that revealed his involvement in the sexual assault of a young girl under the age of 13 in 2016. The court heard detailed accounts of his actions, which shocked the community and prompted a strong judicial response.Subsequently, on November 9 of the following year, Doran faced additional charges related to historic sex offences dating back to when he was just 15 years old. These included the attempted rape of a five-year-old girl, among other serious allegations. The evidence presented during the trial painted a disturbing picture of a pattern of predatory behavior spanning several years, culminating in his conviction on multiple counts.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Doran was held in custody at Chelmsford Crown Court, where he awaited sentencing. The court was presided over by Judge Patricia Lynch QC, who did not hold back her condemnation of Doran’s actions. Sitting in the dock, Doran appeared motionless as the judge addressed him directly, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes and the impact on his victims.
Judge Lynch expressed her disappointment and urged Doran to feel shame for his conduct. She also acknowledged the emotional toll on the victims, particularly the young girl involved, and her mother, who was present in court. The judge remarked, “You have the difficulty of dealing with the little girl, but I hope it brings an end to this period. I hope you start rebuilding both of your lives now that at last it is over.”
As a result of his convictions, Luke Doran was sentenced to a total of ten years in prison. Additionally, he was subjected to a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), designed to restrict his future conduct and protect the public from any potential reoffending. The court’s decision reflected the severity of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision.
Details of the charges and sentences include: engaging in sexual activity with a girl under 13, which carried a four-year prison term; multiple counts of indecent assault, with sentences of six months and two years to run concurrently; the attempted rape of a young girl, which resulted in a six-year consecutive sentence; sexual assault charges, each carrying two-year concurrent sentences; and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, which was sentenced to six months concurrently. The case also involved three counts of malicious communication, each resulting in a three-month sentence, served concurrently.
These convictions highlight the serious nature of Doran’s offences and the judicial system’s commitment to holding offenders accountable. The community of Witham and the wider Essex area continues to grapple with the implications of such disturbing crimes, and the court’s firm stance aims to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider similar actions.
