LUCAS SMITH AND SHOCKING VOYEURISM INCIDENT IN DERBY
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Derby community, Lucas Smith, a young man who was once residing in the Sinfin area and recently moved to William Street in Derby city centre, was found guilty of secretly filming a female victim engaged in intimate acts. The Derby Crown Court heard that Smith's actions were carried out without the victim's knowledge, as he secretly recorded her while she was unaware, ostensibly for his own gratification.
The court revealed that this disturbing incident was uncovered after Smith's offending came to light through police investigations.
Smith faced multiple charges of voyeurism, a crime that involves secretly observing another person engaging in private activities without their consent.
During the proceedings, it was established that his victim was entirely unaware that she had been recorded, and she had no idea that her private moments had been captured on camera.
Lucas Smith, who at the time of the offences was a teenager and an aspiring university student, admitted to three counts of voyeurism.
His behavior was condemned by the court, which emphasized the seriousness of his actions despite his remorse.
The judge, Shaun Smith KC, sentenced him to a nine-month community order.
Additionally, Smith was placed on the sex offender register for the next five years.
In addressing Smith directly, Judge Shaun Smith KC commented, “You summed this offending up best yourself when you said what you did was stupid.
It was really, really, stupid.
You recorded it and she did not know, but importantly you weren’t going to do anything with it, such as share it or put it on the internet.
You did it for your own gratification, and you can’t do things like that.” The judge further pointed out that Smith’s actions were both criminal and reckless.
While expressing some leniency, the judge acknowledged that Smith’s decision to record his victim without her knowledge was profoundly inappropriate.
He noted that Smith’s remorse had spared the victim from having to testify in court, which was a small consolation in the context of the offense.
During the hearing, Dawn Smith, presenting mitigation on his behalf, explained that Lucas Smith was living with his father and grandparents at the time.
She added that he hopes to start university in the upcoming autumn.
The court was also advised that Smith’s previous address was in Lismore Court, Sinfin.
Judge Smith concluded his comments by reminding Smith that upon attending university, he would be required to inform local authorities of his new address and coordinate with probation services.
The case underlined the ongoing importance of addressing the implications of voyeurism and respecting individuals’ privacy, especially when involving vulnerable victims.
The identity of the victim has been protected by law throughout the proceedings.
