LUCAS IRONS FROM ABINGDON SENTENCED IN LONDON COURT FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING CHILDREN

In a significant legal development, Lucas Irons, a man from Abingdon, has seen his prison sentence considerably reduced following an appeal. Originally sentenced to ten years in prison for a series of serious sexual offenses involving minors, his term has now been cut down to seven years after a ruling by the Court of Appeal in London.

Irons, aged 29 and residing on Ock Street in Abingdon, was convicted by a jury composed of six men and six women of multiple charges, including two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, inciting a child to participate in sexual acts, and sexual assault. These crimes were committed between July 2014 and January 2015, with the victims being young girls who, for legal reasons, cannot be identified.

The case against Irons was brought to light during his trial at Oxford Crown Court, where evidence revealed that he targeted vulnerable young girls in the Abingdon area to fulfill his own sexual desires. The court heard how Irons had used online networks to identify and manipulate his victims, exploiting their trust and innocence for his own gratification.

On November 1, at the same court, Judge Peter Ross delivered a stern judgment, describing Irons as a dangerous individual. The judge condemned his actions as calculated and premeditated, emphasizing that Irons had deliberately used online platforms to locate and target young girls. Judge Ross stated that Irons was “out of control” and had employed a systematic approach to his offending, which involved grooming and exploiting minors for sexual purposes.

In addition to the initial ten-year prison sentence, Judge Ross imposed an extended license period of four years, warning that Irons might be required to serve his entire sentence in custody if he violated the terms of his release. The judge’s decision reflected the severity of the crimes and the need to protect the public from further harm.

However, in a subsequent appeal hearing held in London, three judges—Judge Martyn Zeidman QC, Lord Justice Treacy, and Mrs Justice May—reviewed the case. They agreed to reduce Irons’ sentence from ten years to seven, although they maintained the four-year extended license period, which will now be served consecutively. This decision underscores the ongoing judicial assessment of the appropriate punishment for such grave offenses.

Earlier, in November 2016, Irons had already been sentenced to ten years after being convicted at Oxford Crown Court for similar offenses. During that trial, it was established that Irons, then aged 27, had groomed a schoolgirl online before meeting her in person to engage in sexual acts. The victim was under 16 at the time. Additionally, Irons was found guilty of sexually assaulting another girl under the age of 16 by touching her under her clothing. These crimes took place in Abingdon and Oxford between July and December 2014.

Irons’ criminal activities highlight the dangers posed by individuals who exploit online platforms to target vulnerable minors. His case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and the need for stringent legal measures to prevent such predatory behavior from going unpunished.
