LIZA JOHNS AND BARRY FAULKNER FROM BIRKENHEAD SENTENCED OVER CRUELTY TO COLLIE DOGS

In a case that has shocked the local community of Birkenhead, Liza Johns, born around 1975, and Barry Faulkner, born on December 13, 1967, both residents of Harcourt Street, were found guilty of neglecting their pet dogs, Custard and Tippy, by failing to seek necessary veterinary care for their severe skin conditions.

The incident came to light after concerned members of the public reported their suspicions to the RSPCA, having observed the dogs with significant patches of missing fur and apparent distress. The RSPCA responded swiftly, and inspector Anthony Joynes was dispatched to investigate the situation at the property.

Upon arrival, Inspector Joynes described the scene as distressing. He noted an overpowering smell of yeast infection permeating the air, which immediately indicated a severe skin issue. The two dogs were found in a state of considerable discomfort, with Custard, a collie, actively nibbling at herself to the extent that she managed to rip open a sore on her body. Tippy was also visibly suffering, exhibiting signs of intense itching and distress.

Both dogs were promptly taken to a veterinary clinic, where they were diagnosed with mange, a parasitic skin disease that requires prompt treatment. Inspector Joynes emphasized that it was difficult to determine exactly how long the dogs had been suffering in this condition, but stressed that they should have been taken to a vet at the earliest signs of illness. He pointed out that under the law, pet owners have a duty to care for their animals, and neglecting veterinary treatment constitutes a serious breach of that duty.

Since their rescue, Custard and Tippy have shown remarkable improvement under the care of the RSPCA. Inspector Joynes remarked that although they still have a way to go in their recovery, the dogs are no longer in the severe discomfort they endured initially. He highlighted that the dogs' personalities are now emerging, and they have become more friendly, inquisitive, and playful. The distress caused by their untreated skin conditions has lessened, allowing them to regain some of their normal behavior.

During the sentencing hearing, both Johns and Faulkner received a 12-month community order. Faulkner was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and was required to pay £620 in costs. Johns was sentenced to 60 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £455 in costs. Additionally, both individuals were banned from owning dogs for five years, although this ban expired in March 2022.

This case underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and the legal obligation to seek veterinary care when animals show signs of illness. The community of Birkenhead continues to be reminded of the consequences of neglecting the welfare of domestic animals.
