LIAM WHITE FROM CREDITON SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INVOLVING PET AND PARTNER

Liam White, born on July 6, 1988, and previously residing on Tarka Way in Crediton, was convicted of a series of disturbing acts involving animal cruelty and domestic violence. The case revealed a troubling pattern of behavior that culminated in the tragic death of his pet cat and violent assaults on his former partner.

According to court records, White claimed that he discovered his pet cat in a severely distressed state, with injuries that appeared to be life-threatening. In an attempt, he decided to euthanize the animal himself, using a hammer. After the act, he disposed of the cat’s body in the communal bin area of his apartment block in Crediton. The cat’s remains were later found approximately two weeks after the incident, contained within a plastic shopping bag along with her litter tray. A post-mortem examination revealed that the cat had suffered a fractured jaw and femur, injuries consistent with a violent attack.

The court heard that White’s actions were described by his lawyer as “well-intentioned,” though she admitted that his decision not to take the cat to a veterinarian for proper euthanasia was inappropriate and brutal. The lawyer acknowledged that White’s response was misguided and that his actions caused unnecessary suffering to the animal.

Further complicating the case was a witness account of White’s violent behavior towards his then-partner. The witness reported seeing White headbutting her during an incident, which was part of a broader pattern of domestic violence. Court proceedings revealed that White had a history of violent behavior, with 17 previous convictions, some related to violence, although none specifically domestic in nature. It was also noted that White suffers from an unstable personality disorder.

White pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assault causing actual bodily harm, battery, and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. His lawyer emphasized that he had since moved on from his past behavior, now living with a new partner and attempting to rebuild his life.

Judge Anna Richardson addressed the court, noting that the background to the violence was a volatile relationship. She clarified that the specifics of how the cat was injured were not central to her sentencing decision but acknowledged that White found the animal in a suffering state. She stated, “Rather than take it to a vet, you believed it was not going to survive. You did not know that, and you responded by killing it using a hammer. I accept you were trying to prevent it suffering further.”

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Richardson expressed hope for White’s rehabilitation, choosing not to disqualify him from owning animals in the future. Instead, she imposed a 20-week suspended sentence, coupled with a requirement to abstain from alcohol for 120 days. Additionally, White was placed under a five-year restraining order preventing him from contacting his former partner. He was also ordered to complete a “Building Better Relationships” program as part of his rehabilitation process.

This case highlights the disturbing intersection of animal cruelty and domestic violence, raising ongoing concerns about the need for intervention and support for individuals with violent tendencies in Crediton and beyond.
