LIAM MURPHY, SHEFFIELD RAPIST, SENTENCED FOR ATTACK IN SHIRECLIFFE WOODS

In December 2012, a tragic and disturbing incident unfolded in Sheffield that has left a lasting scar on the victim and her family.

The mother of a teenage girl, who was abducted and assaulted in a horrifying attack, publicly expressed her anguish and frustration over the crime committed by Liam Murphy, a man with a troubling history of sexual misconduct in the Sheffield area.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of a day in May, when the 17-year-old girl was making her way home after attending a party.

As she was walking along a street in Sheffield, she was approached by Liam Murphy, a 34-year-old man residing on Holgate Close, Parson Cross.

Murphy, who had a known history of indecent exposure, asked her for the time, seemingly innocent at first glance.

However, the situation quickly escalated as Murphy forcibly took her into nearby woods, specifically Scraith Wood in the Shirecliffe neighborhood.

Once in the woods, Murphy ordered the terrified teenager to the ground and proceeded to commit a heinous act of sexual assault.

During the trial, it was revealed that Murphy had placed his hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming, telling her not to make any noise.

The girl later recounted that she was so frightened she believed she was going to die, and she followed his commands out of sheer terror.

Despite her pleas for him to stop, Murphy ignored her, and the girl was subjected to a brutal assault.

She described her feelings afterward as one of disgust and a desperate desire to wash away the trauma, saying, “I just wanted to get in the shower.” Her ordeal was compounded by the fact that Murphy had a history of similar offenses.

During his trial at Sheffield Crown Court, it was revealed that he had four previous convictions for indecent exposure in the same woods.

These incidents spanned several years, including 2006, 2009, 2011, and February of the current year, all occurring during daylight hours.

Notably, one of these incidents involved Murphy exposing himself to a young mother pushing her baby in a pram in broad daylight.

Murphy, who worked as a warehouse worker and is a father to a nine-year-old daughter, denied the charges of rape.

He claimed that he was at his terminally ill mother’s house at the time of the attack.

However, the jury was presented with evidence of his prior offenses and his history of indecent exposure, which painted a troubling picture of his pattern of behavior.

Following a thorough investigation by South Yorkshire Police, Murphy was found guilty of the assault.

He was subsequently sentenced to nine years in prison, a punishment that the victim’s mother felt was insufficient given the severity of the crime.

She expressed her relief that Murphy was now behind bars but voiced her disappointment that he did not receive a longer sentence, emphasizing the profound impact the attack has had on her daughter’s life.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been left deeply traumatized by the assault.

She now suffers from nightmares, flashbacks, and a loss of confidence, which has severely affected her daily life.

Her mother stated, “She is too scared to go out of the house, she has lost all her confidence, and she suffers nightmares and flashbacks every single night.

She is well and truly traumatised.” Detective Constable Emma Shipley commented on the case, saying, “The sentence is reflective of the attack on an innocent young woman who went through a horrendous ordeal at the hands of Murphy.

South Yorkshire Police were committed to finding the person responsible for this attack and a thorough investigation was conducted.

Hopefully, this will provide some closure for the victim and her family.”
