LIAM CAIRNS AND SHOCKING INDECENT BEHAVIOR ON NORTHERN RAIL FROM NEWCASTLE TO CARLISLE
A suspended prison sentence has been issued to Liam Cairns, a train passenger from Blackpool, after he subjected two 17-year-old students to a disturbing incident while traveling on a Northern Rail service from Newcastle to Carlisle. The events took place on February 18, and the court proceedings took place at Carlisle’s Rickergate Court.Liam Cairns, aged 33, acknowledged his actions by pleading guilty to multiple charges including exposure, being drunk and disorderly conduct, as well as four counts of assault—two of which involved police officers. The court was presented with a detailed account of Cairns's appalling behavior during the journey, which was marked by alcohol consumption and increasingly aggressive conduct.
The incident first came to the court’s attention when two students, a male and a female, became aware of Cairns shortly after the train departed from Newcastle. They noticed him sitting immediately behind them and soon realized he was behaving in a disruptive manner. Witnesses reported that Cairns was verbally abusive, directing shouted insults and obscene language at a group of men sitting opposite him. His shouting and swearing drew the attention of fellow passengers, who eventually moved to other seats to escape his outbursts.
However, Cairns’s behavior escalated as he shifted seats to sit directly opposite the two teenage students. During this time, he made alarming and threatening remarks, stating that he would kill 'him,' although the exact target of this threat was not clear. The students were then subjected to more disturbing conduct when Cairns touched the male student’s stomach without consent. This act prompted the female student to immediately protest. Cairns responded violently by 'lightly' slapping her face with the back of his hand.
As the train continued its journey, Cairns’s drunken state became more evident. Witnesses reported that he was shouting and slurring his speech, and moments later, he exposed himself in front of the students. His behavior prompted swift action once the train arrived at Carlisle’s Citadel Railway Station, where law enforcement was waiting. Cairns was arrested at this point, and it was during this confrontation that he assaulted two police officers.
Cairns later claimed to police that he had no recollection of the events, attributing his behavior to his intoxication. Despite this, he issued an apology for his actions. He also disclosed that he had been drinking heavily that day to mark the anniversary of a child’s death—a significant personal reason that contributed to his impaired state.
The court reviewed Cairns’s lengthy criminal record, which includes 40 offenses, notably previous incidents of exposure in the past. Cairns’s address was noted as Bairstow Street, Blackpool.
Magistrates sentenced Cairns to a 12-week jail term, which was suspended for twelve months. The justification for this leniency was based on the fact that his offensive behavior was alcohol-fueled, a similar offense was present on his record, and his teenage victims had been 'physically trapped' when Cairns exposed himself.
Additional penalties included up to 25 days of rehabilitation programs and the completion of 150 hours of unpaid community work. It was also ordered that Cairns register as a sex offender for the next seven years. Furthermore, he was mandated to pay £200 in compensation to the female student and one of the police officers he assaulted during the incident.
