READING PENSIONER LESTER BELL SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL OFFENCES INVOLVING CHILDREN
In October 2021, a disturbing case unfolded at Reading Crown Court involving Lester Bell, a 70-year-old man from Reading who was convicted of multiple heinous sexual offences against young girls. The court heard that Bell’s abuse was both prolonged and deeply depraved, beginning when one of his victims was merely six years old.
His actions included rape, sexual assault, and other forms of sexual misconduct, which he documented through filming his crimes.
These videos were later shown to a jury during a summer trial, revealing the disturbing extent of his offending.
Bell’s crimes came to light after a lengthy investigation, culminating in his conviction on 17 counts related to the abuse of two young girls.
The court was informed that Bell’s offences were non-recent, meaning they occurred some time ago, but their impact was no less severe.
The prosecution sought a significant sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Bell’s actions and the lasting trauma inflicted upon his victims.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge, His Honour Judge Paul Dugdale, chose to withhold specific details of the abuse, citing the disturbing nature of the evidence and the fact that Bell appeared to derive sexual excitement from recounting his crimes.
The judge noted that Bell, who had no prior criminal record, was not in good health and was considered an ongoing risk to the public.
Despite these factors, the judge expressed that initially, he believed Bell might not pose a continuing threat, but his behavior during the trial changed that assessment.
Judge Dugdale observed that Bell had gone into unnecessary detail about his offending during the trial, which was inappropriate and revealing of his continued sexual gratification from the crimes.
The court was told that Bell did not admit guilt and instead sought to portray his actions in a way that seemed to give him some form of twisted pleasure.
The judge remarked that Bell’s inability to accept the seriousness of his actions and the devastating impact on his victims was deeply troubling.
In his sentencing, Judge Dugdale described Bell as an “ongoing risk” and sentenced him to 30 years in prison, with a minimum of 16 years before he could be considered for release.
The sentence was based on multiple counts, including five of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, two counts of rape of a child under 13, three counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, one count of attempted rape, two counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and multiple counts of making indecent images of children across categories A, B, and C.
Bell was also ordered to remain on the sex offenders register for life, and an order was made for the destruction of all devices and images related to his crimes.

After the sentence was handed down, Judge Dugdale addressed the two young girls who had bravely given evidence in court, offering words of support and encouragement.
He acknowledged the courage it took for them to testify and reassured them that they should not let Bell’s actions prevent them from living their lives.
The judge emphasized that moving forward was the best way to heal and put the traumatic experience behind them.
