LESLEY SMITH FROM LIVERPOOL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AND ONLINE ABUSE

In April 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Leslie Smith, an 18-year-old from Liverpool, who committed serious sexual offences against a young girl and subsequently engaged in a campaign of online harassment and humiliation.

Leslie Smith had a troubling history with the victim, beginning when he was just 16 years old.

During this period, he pressured her into engaging in multiple sexual acts, despite her clear refusals.

The situation escalated when Smith, then 17, had sexual intercourse with her.

The girl, who was underage, found herself trapped in a cycle of coercion and manipulation, with Smith persistently pestering her until she reluctantly consented to his advances.

Adding to the gravity of his misconduct, Smith took explicit photographs of the girl during their encounters.

He then used social media as a tool for harassment, posting these indecent images online on his Instagram account.

Although he later deleted the photos and issued a superficial apology, the damage was already done.

Smith’s actions did not stop there; he convinced another girl to create an anonymous Instagram account, which was used to distribute further explicit images of the victim, along with her personal details such as her name, phone number, and address.

Threats of violence and intimidation were also part of his tactics, including threats to damage her property and harm her family members.

When police arrived at Smith’s residence in Dovecot to arrest him, they encountered resistance.

His father initially refused to allow officers entry, but they eventually found Smith hiding on a small flat roof just outside his bedroom window.

During questioning, Smith made disturbing comments, questioning the legality of his actions by asking, “How can it be rape when she was consenting to everything?” and threatening violence with statements like, “I’m going to smash her head in, the s***.” Further incidents of intimidation occurred after his arrest.

Smith, along with associates, chased the victim at a local supermarket in Huyton, threatening to inflict serious harm.

The victim, overwhelmed by fear, admitted to feeling unable to go outside due to the threats and described suffering panic attacks, feeling as though Smith had some form of control and power over her life.

During the court proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court, Smith pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including eight counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of inciting a child into sexual activity, and intimidation.

He also admitted to two counts of making indecent images of a child, taking such images, and disclosing sexual photographs with the intent to cause distress.

His defense attorney, Julian Nutter, expressed that Smith had experienced the “utter shock” of being in custody and had lived in fear because of the nature of his offences.

Nutter described Smith as “immature” and “truly sorry” to the girl and her family.

Judge Clement Goldstone, QC, sentenced Leslie Smith to three and a half years in prison.

The judge emphasized the malicious intent behind Smith’s actions, stating that he aimed “to make her life a misery” and described his behaviour as “despicable and mean.” The judge also imposed an indefinite restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, requiring Smith to sign the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.

As the court concluded, Smith was seen sobbing in the dock as he was ordered to comply with these restrictions, highlighting the serious nature of his crimes and the lasting impact on the victim’s life.
