LESLEY FLETCHER AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN NEWCASTLE
A 76-year-old man from Washington has been sentenced to prison after engaging in heinous online activities involving the sexual exploitation of children.Leslie Fletcher, residing on Brancepeth Close in Washington, was found to have paid to view children being sexually abused in the Philippines, a crime that has shocked the local community and authorities alike.
Fletcher's criminal behavior included requesting and viewing indecent photographs and videos of babies and children through online platforms.
His actions came to light when Northumbria Police's specialized Paedophile Online Investigation Team (Polit) was alerted after Google and Microsoft flagged suspicious sharing of indecent images.
This led to a thorough investigation, during which officers seized Fletcher's electronic devices.
Upon examination of his devices, investigators uncovered receipts and detailed records of calls made to individuals involved in abusing children.
These findings provided concrete evidence of Fletcher’s direct involvement and intent.
The police charged him with multiple serious offenses, and he subsequently pleaded guilty to 14 counts.
The charges against Fletcher included three counts of making indecent images of children, three counts of arranging the commission of child sex offenses, four counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, and four counts of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity.
Notably, seven of these offenses involved Fletcher arranging for children to be abused abroad, specifically in the Philippines.
At Newcastle Crown Court on Monday, Fletcher was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison.
In addition to his incarceration, he was issued a sexual harm prevention order and ordered to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Detective Constable Rob Smoult of Northumbria Police emphasized the severity of the case, stating, “Offenders such as Fletcher are not welcome in our communities.” He further remarked, “The sentence demonstrates that crimes of this nature will not be tolerated, and individuals like Fletcher will face the full weight of the law.” Detective Constable Smoult also highlighted Fletcher’s awareness of the illegality and immorality of his actions, noting, “Fletcher knew he had no excuse and was left with no choice but to admit his guilt.” The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable victims from such predatory behavior.
