LEONARD GREENOUGH, SALISBURY PUPPY DEALER, CAUGHT SELLING DOGS ILLEGALLY IN SALISBURY

Leonard Greenough, a resident of Salisbury, has been found guilty of operating an illegal puppy selling operation without the necessary licensing. Born on November 30, 1982, Greenough, who resides at 1 Newton Bungalows, Whiteparish, Salisbury SP5 2SN, engaged in the sale of numerous puppies through online platforms, despite lacking the proper authorization to do so.

Greenough, known locally as a bloodsports enthusiast, faced charges after a private prosecution was initiated by the charity Animal Protection Services. The organization revealed that between June and November 2020, Greenough posted nine advertisements on the popular classified ads website Pets for Homes. These listings featured various breeds, including cocker spaniels, lurcher Patterdale crosses, and 'Jackapoos,' with an estimated total value of approximately £16,700.

During the court proceedings, Greenough’s legal representative argued that her client was a hobbyist breeder who listed dogs online on behalf of friends, claiming he had no direct ownership or access to the internet. She stated, “He doesn’t own all of these puppies and therefore any profit would have gone to the owners and not to him. He has to plead guilty to the fact he was selling these [dogs] without a licence.”

The magistrate overseeing the case acknowledged Greenough’s explanation, indicating that his failure to secure a pet shop license was likely an oversight rather than an intentional attempt to engage in puppy farming. The court accepted that there was no evidence of a deliberate effort to operate a large-scale illegal puppy business.

As part of the sentencing, Greenough was fined £193 and ordered to pay £234 in costs and surcharges. Importantly, the court did not impose a ban on him owning or dealing in dogs, allowing him to continue his involvement with animals if he chooses. The case was reported by the Salisbury Journal and the Swindon Advertiser.

Additionally, it was noted that Greenough’s son, Josh Greenough, born on November 18, 2006, is also associated with the family, though no further details were provided about him in relation to this case.
