LEON DUNLAVY CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN NEWCASTLE - SENTENCED IN CROWN COURT
A teenage individual named Leon Dunlavy, residing on Chestnut Avenue in the Cowgate area of Newcastle, was recently involved in a serious criminal case concerning the possession and distribution of indecent images of children. The incident came to light after police received specific intelligence about his activities, leading to his arrest on August 22 of the previous year.
During police questioning, Dunlavy claimed that he might have encountered some indecent images through pop-up advertisements that redirected him, but he insisted that he simply clicked away from these images and did not actively seek them out.
He also mentioned that he was active on Discord, a popular online platform, where he believed others might have sent him links to such illicit material.
Dunlavy maintained that he did not request or intentionally save any of these images, attempting to distance himself from direct involvement.
Following his arrest, authorities conducted a thorough examination of his electronic devices.
On one of his phones, investigators found no illegal material; however, there was evidence suggesting that he had used search terms associated with child abuse images, indicating some level of interest or curiosity.
A second phone, which was identified as one of the more significant devices, contained two of the most serious images classified as Category A, along with one Category C image.
These categories denote the severity and explicitness of the material.
Further investigation revealed that Dunlavy possessed a cloud storage account containing a disturbing collection of videos and images.
Specifically, there were 45 videos classified as Category A, 27 as Category B, and 12 as Category C.
Among these were two videos depicting extreme pornography involving bestiality, which is considered particularly heinous.
The ages of the children depicted in these images and videos were estimated to range from as young as four years old to 14 years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of the material involved.
At the time of the offences, Dunlavy was 17 years old; he is now 19.
He has no prior criminal record.
During the court proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possessing extreme pornography.
In his defense, Dunlavy claimed that his interest was primarily in images of older teenagers and expressed disgust at some of the material involving younger children.
His sentencing included a two-year community order, which requires him to complete 120 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, he will be required to sign the sex offenders register for a period of five years and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order, which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing future offences.
Jonathan Cousins, representing Dunlavy, described his client as a young man who leads a sheltered life, heavily reliant on family support, and considered to be socially isolated.
Cousins emphasized that Dunlavy is not a mature offender and suggested that his circumstances should be taken into account during sentencing.
