LEIGH GRIFFITHS SHOCKS CARDIFF WITH HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE AND RAPE CASE
In September 2021, a deeply disturbing case emerged from Cardiff involving Leigh Griffiths, a 39-year-old man whose actions have left a young girl profoundly traumatized. The heinous crimes took place within the city and the surrounding Gwent Police jurisdiction, revealing a pattern of sexual abuse that spanned over a period of time.
Leigh Griffiths, a resident of Cardiff, engaged in a series of criminal acts against a girl who was under the age of 10 when the abuse began.
The victim, whose identity has been protected by lifelong anonymity, was subjected to repeated sexual assaults, including rape, by Griffiths.
The abuse was particularly brutal, with Griffiths forcing the girl to perform oral sex on him and instructing her on how to do so, while he also engaged in similar acts with her.
The young girl was also exposed to pornography and was made to watch sexual acts, which compounded her trauma.
The prosecutor, Nigel Fryer, detailed the extent of Griffiths' misconduct during the sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court.
It was revealed that Griffiths had raped the girl multiple times, causing her physical pain and emotional suffering.
He also masturbated in front of her, further humiliating and traumatizing her.
The abuse was carried out over a period, with Griffiths attempting to maintain secrecy by threatening the girl, warning her that she would be sent to prison if she disclosed what was happening.
According to the court proceedings, the victim began to understand the wrongfulness of Griffiths' actions after a police officer visited her school and showed her a video about victims of sexual abuse.
This educational intervention prompted her to research and understand sexual abuse behaviors, which led her to realize the severity of what had been done to her.
The girl described feeling overwhelmed by depression, crying, shaking, and even attempting to take her own life as a result of the trauma inflicted upon her.
When Griffiths was confronted, he admitted his guilt but appeared indifferent about his actions, responding with a simple “Dunno” when asked why he had sexually abused the girl.
During his police interview, Griffiths was visibly emotional, crying and expressing regret, stating that he had “f***** his life up” and that he had done “something really stupid.” Despite this, he offered little explanation for his conduct, mainly giving no comment to questions but acknowledging that he knew his actions were wrong.
Leigh Griffiths pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including four counts of raping a child under 13, two counts of attempting to rape a child under 13, eight counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, one count of engaging in sexual activity in front of a child, three counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and four counts of causing a child to watch a sexual act.
The court sentenced him to a total of 12 years in prison.
Additionally, Griffiths was ordered to be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 15 years, aiming to restrict his contact and prevent further offenses.
The victim, in her personal statement, expressed her profound suffering and the lasting impact of Griffiths’ actions.
She described feeling that he was selfish, having stolen her childhood without remorse.
She recounted her shock upon discovering the full extent of his abuse through online research, which left her feeling ashamed and numb.
The girl emphasized that Griffiths had continued to live a normal life while she endured the pain in silence, and she called for him to face the consequences of his actions.
Her statement highlighted the devastating effect on her future relationships, her haunted memories, and her hope to rebuild her life after the trauma inflicted by Griffiths.
