December 2008 Man had thousands of child sex images A Bedfordshire resident has been jailed for a year for dowloading over 30,000 child sex abuse images, one of which was a picture of a baby being raped. Police raided 44-year-old Leigh Cane’s home in Timber Lane, Woburn, Bedfordshire in April 2008 after they discovered his credit card had been used to pay to access the illegal internet sites. Prosecutor Natalie Carter told Luton Crown Court that officers seized two computer towers, a zip drive and CDs and DVDs. Two still images involved the sex abuse of babies. One baby was being raped by an adult, another image showed a seven or eight-year-old girl being raped and a third a girl of the same aged having sex with a dog. Mrs Carter said in all there were 3,607 live still images at Level One, the least serious level. Officers found Cane had deleted 30,247 Level One images, 308 Level Two, 1,288 Level Three, 928 at Level Four and 85 at Level Five. There were also 28 live movies at Level One and one at Level Five. Cane had also deleted movies. 186 were at Level One, 178 at Level Two, 74 at Level Three, 170 at Level Four and six at Level Five. In a police interview Cane said he had deleted most of the images in 2006 because he was “disgusted” by them. He told the officers he had an interest in legal adult pornography. Cane appeared for sentence having pleaded guilty to one charge of possessing indecent images and 22 of making indecent images. Defence barrister Anna Faul said Cane was of previous good character. She said he had last accessed the images back in 2006 and had deleted most of them because he regarded child sex abuse images as “totally unacceptable.” Miss Faul said Cane was in a relationship and his girlfriend was standing by him. Jailing him for a year Judge Richard Foster said: “I have to think about what these children have been through for your perverted sexual gratification. You helped create a market by paying for this material.” He also ordered that Cane register as a sex offender for ten years. He banned him from working with children for life, said he must not have contact with anyone under 16 unless supervised and must not work with children. Cane must also allow the police access to his computer at any time. The computer hardware and discs are to be destroyed.
