LEE WILSON AND HIS SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN NEWCASTLE

Lee Wilson, a resident of Slatyford in Newcastle, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of abhorrent child sex offences following a detailed police investigation that uncovered incriminating evidence hidden within a safe concealed inside a wall cavity.

Wilson, aged 40, who resided on Pooley Road in Slatyford, ultimately admitted to seven serious offences involving young girls, after authorities found a mobile phone with damning content stored securely away, which played a crucial role in his conviction.

The case against Wilson revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming and exploitation carried out at a local swimming pool in Tyneside.

One of his victims recounted her painful experience in a letter read aloud during the hearing, referring to Wilson as a "mean man." She described her feelings of anger and sadness, emphasizing her desire to distance herself from her abuser.

Her letter expressed her pain with lines such as, "You made me feel angry and sad.

I don't want to say your name but I know what you did was wrong.

I liked you.

I changed and I have to live with things.

I never want to see you again.

I want to ask you why did you do this?

Why in the world did you do it?

Why did you think it was a good idea?

Mean man," ending with a sad face emoji.

The investigation began in September of the previous year when the first victim's family contacted police after she disclosed Wilson’s inappropriate actions.

Prosecutor Dr.

Chris Wood highlighted that Wilson exploited the trust of young girls by offering them sweets as a means of grooming, and he instructed the victims to keep their abuse a secret.

These grooming tactics were instrumental in facilitating his illegal activities.

A second girl also fell victim to Wilson's manipulation at the same swimming pool, where he befriended her and her family.

Witnesses described how Wilson would often sit on the edge of the pool observing rather than swimming himself, raising suspicion among the child's father.

During arrest, Wilson initially denied any wrongdoing and subjected the victims to a distressing court process where he refused to admit to his actions, further compounding their trauma.

The children faced cross-examination by Wilson's legal counsel, during which they were falsely told they were lying, a process described by the prosecutor as needlessly cruel.

Police investigations uncovered further incriminating evidence in September last year when officers searching Wilson’s home discovered a second mobile phone hidden in a safe within a wall cavity.

This device contained indecent images of children, some captured via what appeared to be a hidden surveillance camera.

Among the images were pictures of one of the girls and other children from her family, providing concrete proof of Wilson’s disturbing conduct.

The suffering of the victims and their families was vividly illustrated through impact statements read aloud in court.

One mother expressed how long-lasting the emotional scars would be, revealing that her daughter now exhibits heightened fears, such as becoming distressed upon seeing a bald man resembling Wilson.

She recounted that clothes and toys had to be discarded because they reminded her daughter of the abuse.

Her words reflected a profound sense of betrayal and pain, stating, “The impact will be felt for years to come.

He has stolen her innocence.

Smiles have turned into tears.

I do hate this man with every part of my being.

It makes me feel physically sick.” The father of another girl described the profound transformations in her behavior, noting that she had once been a carefree child but had since become withdrawn.

He shared her emotional breakdowns, including nightmares and nighttime shouting, and pointed out her drawings, contrasting bright, colourful images from before with dark, black illustrations afterward.

He expressed his heartbreak over her trauma, saying, "She can't understand how someone she thought was a friend could do something so terrible." Throughout the hearings, Wilson maintained a stance of denial, refusing to accept responsibility for his actions.

He pleaded guilty to multiple counts, including three charges of assault by penetration, two of sexual assault, engaging in sexual activity with a child, and making indecent images of children.

The judge, Recorder Toby Hedworth QC, sentenced him to a minimum of eleven years in prison, with an order to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Additionally, Wilson will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order to protect current and future victims.

In his sentencing remarks, the judge expressed concern that Wilson remained in denial about the true nature of his crimes, dismissing the offenses as mere bad decisions.

The court’s assessment was that Wilson is an offender of particular concern, raising issues about his risk to the community.

Wilson’s defence attorney explained that he suffers from a heart condition that could shorten his lifespan and stated that Wilson has sincerely apologized and expressed regret for his actions, although the prosecutor noted that such apologies may hold little meaning given the severity of his crimes.

Jonathan Hanratty from CPS North East emphasized the predatory nature of Wilson’s conduct, detailing how he deliberately engineered circumstances conducive to abuse.

He highlighted the manipulative tactics, such as bribery with sweets and secrecy, that Wilson employed to conceal his activities.

Once caught, Wilson’s indifference to the harm caused became evident, as he showed little concern for the ongoing trauma inflicted upon his victims and their families.

The court's decision aims to acknowledge the gravity of Wilson’s offences while offering a measure of closure and justice to those affected, as a stark reminder of the dire consequences that await those who exploit and harm vulnerable children in Newcastle and beyond.
