LEE BARTLETT, FORMER NEWQUAY SURFING CHAMPION, CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN DEVASTATING CASE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Newquay, Lee Bartlett, a former professional surfer and well-known figure in the surfing world, was found guilty of possessing a large collection of indecent images of children. The incident came to light during a court hearing held at Truro Crown Court, where Bartlett, aged 50, faced serious charges related to the possession of hundreds of illicit images.

According to court records, Bartlett, who resides on Mayfield Road in Newquay, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. The charges detailed the extent of his illegal collection, which included a total of 183 Category A images, 244 Category B images, and 177 Category C images. These images depicted children being subjected to sexual abuse and rape, as well as other forms of exploitation that are considered among the most heinous crimes involving minors.

The illicit material was believed to have been accumulated over a period spanning from 2018 to June 2020, indicating a sustained period of offending. The court was presented with evidence of Bartlett’s involvement in the possession of these images, which has caused widespread concern given his previous reputation as a prominent figure in the surfing community.

During the sentencing, the judge opted for a relatively lenient punishment considering the severity of the crimes. Bartlett was sentenced to eight months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits another offence within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to complete a 40-day rehabilitation activity program aimed at addressing underlying issues related to his offending behavior.

Furthermore, Bartlett is required to undertake 100 hours of unpaid community service and must register as a sex offender for the next ten years. A sexual harm prevention order was also issued, restricting his activities and contact with minors to prevent any potential future harm. The case has left many in the Newquay community deeply disturbed, given Bartlett’s previous standing as a top-level competitor both nationally and across Europe, as well as his work as a surfboard shaper.

His reputation as a respected athlete and craftsman has been overshadowed by the gravity of his crimes, prompting ongoing discussions about safeguarding and the importance of vigilance within local communities and sporting circles.
